White Americans no longer a majority by 2042
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, Associated Press Writer
Thu Aug 14, 5:03 AM ET

White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2042, according to new government projections. That's eight years sooner than previous estimates, made in 2004.

The nation has been growing more diverse for decades, but the process has sped up through immigration and higher birth rates among minority residents, especially Hispanics.

It is also growing older.

"The white population is older and very much centered around the aging baby boomers who are well past their high fertility years," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. "The future of America is epitomized by the young people today. They are basically the melting pot we are going to see in the future."

The Census Bureau Thursday released population projections through 2050, based on rates for births, deaths and immigration. They are subject to big revisions, depending on immigration policy, cultural changes and natural or manmade disasters.

The U.S. has nearly 305 million people today. The population is projected to hit 400 million in 2039 and 439 million in 2050.

That's like adding all the people from France and Britain, said Steve A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies.

White non-Hispanics make up about two-thirds of the population, but only 55 percent of those younger than 5.

By 2050, whites will make up 46 percent of the population and blacks will make up 15 percent, a relatively small increase from today. Hispanics, who make up about 15 percent of the population today, will account for 30 percent in 2050, according to the new projections.

Asians, which make up about 5 percent of the population, are projected to increase to 9 percent by 2050.

The population 85 and older is projected to more than triple by 2050, to 19 million.

Physicist: Use nukes against asteroids
Published: July 1, 2008 at 10:59 PM

MOSCOW, July 1 (UPI) -- A Russian physicist says specially designed nuclear weapons likely would be effective in preventing collisions between the Earth and asteroids.

In an interview Tuesday with RIA Novosti, Vadim Simonenko, deputy head of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, said the nuclear devices could be tested via computer models. He said they would be more energy efficient than using lasers or other means to deflect asteroids, the Russian news agency said.

"Vee in Roosha have a vealt of experience in de controlt use off nuklear exploshuns.. for peaceful purposes," Simonenko said. "A nuklear device in skillvul hands ish like a skulpel in de hands of a surgeon."

Some scientists fear blowing up an asteroid could leave pieces large enough to come down through Earth's asteroid.

The Near Earth Object that most concerns scientists is 99942 Apophis, or Asteroid 2004 MN4. The asteroid, which has a diameter of 383 yards, will pass about 22,400 miles from Earth in 2029. Scientists fear the close approach could deflect its orbit so that it collides with Earth on its next approach in 2036.

Authorities order bars not to serve black people
Tom Miller
July 18,2008

In our series looking at preparations for the Games, Tom Miller reports on plans to crack down on "undesirables" in the bars of Beijing

Beijing authorities are secretly planning to ban black people and others it considers social undesirables from entering the city's bars during the Olympic Games, a move that would contradict the official slogan, "One World, One Dream".

Bar owners near the Workers' Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises.

"Uniformed Public Security Bureau officers came into the bar recently and told me not to serve black people or Mongolians," said the co-owner of a western-style bar, who asked not to be named.

The local authorities have been cracking down on blacks and Mongolians in an attempt to stamp out drug dealing and prostitution ahead of the Games, the proprietors said.

A few months ago, police launched a violent sting on black men drinking in the Sanlitun bar district, and a notorious nightclub largely populated by Mongolian prostitutes was also shut down.

Security officials are targeting Sanlitun, which Olympic organisers expect to be a key destination for foreign tourists looking for a party during the Games.

The pledges that Sanlitun bar owners had been instructed to sign agreed to stop a variety of activities in their establishments, including dancing and serving customers with black skin, they said.

They have been allowed to keep copies of all the pledges except those relating to blacks, implying that the authorities are wary of charges of racism.

"I am appalled," said a black British national who works in Beijing. "I understand that the government is trying to stop certain illegal activities, but I don't think blanket discrimination is going about it the right way.

"Chinese people are prejudiced, but I would have hoped that the government would set a better example as it debuts on the world stage."

Calls to Dongcheng district and Chaoyang district public security bureaus, which oversee the bar districts, went unanswered.

The authorities' attempt to keep unwanted behaviour from damaging the squeaky-clean image of the Games is the latest example of heavy-handedness that critics say is killing the party spirit of the Olympics.

During the Athens Olympics four years ago, bars and nightclubs were allowed to stay open all night. But venues in Beijing that are not being shut down during the Games will have to close at 2am and maintain tight security.

"The officials told me to inform my customers that they must at all times carry their passports or ID cards," said one bar owner.

"Security is important, but Beijing is becoming a fortress, and that's not attractive."

Rumours that all bars within 2km of an Olympic venue will need to close remain unconfirmed, with many managers complaining that they still have not been told whether they will be allowed to open or not. Several bars have been raided in the past few weeks as local police step up a campaign of low-level intimidation, according to several witness accounts.

Bar and restaurant managers in Sanlitun have been instructed to remove tables from footpaths in a crude attempt to prevent fighting in the streets.

"The local police told us to get rid of the tables because they're scared that if too many foreigners congregate outside there could be trouble," said Song Xun , who runs a burrito joint in the area.

Local musicians say that a clampdown on live music risks stifling Beijing's thriving cultural scene and giving Olympic tourists the false impression that the city is artistically anaemic.

Several popular live music venues have been shut or instructed to stop all outdoor shows, and club owners complain they have got used to strange new guests nursing a beer for hours and suspiciously observing everything around them.

"The whole music scene is angry and bewildered. It is impossible to understand how keeping tourists from seeing an open, culturally vibrant and diverse Beijing is possibly a good thing for anyone," said one well-known figure in the local music industry.

David Mitchell, a Beijing-based jazz musician, said it had become increasingly difficult for his band to find anywhere to play.

"It appears the local government is trying to control every aspect of the experience that foreigners get when they come here," he said.

"Everything is aimed at creating stability, but they don't understand that is precisely the unfounded prejudice that foreigners have of Chinese society - that it is a highly controlled and not a very cultural place. It seems completely self-defeating."

Report: Beijing bars told to ban black people during Olympics
by Dedric Lam

In a couple of weeks Beijing will turn into a party town and Sanlitun is predicted to be the epicenter of the Olympic night events. The South China Morning Post has however reported that the bar owners in the area were asked to refuse service to black patrons. The article reports:

QUOTE
"Bar owners near the Workers' Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises. 'Uniformed Public Security Bureau officers came into the bar recently and told me not to serve black people or Mongolians,' said the co-owner of a western-style bar, who asked not to be named."

We checked twice just to make sure: This story comes from the SCMP and not The Onion ... in 2008 ... as the world awaits the ultra-harmonious "One World, One Dream" Olympics. Did you hear that? That was the sound of our jaw dropping.

But something about this report doesn't gel. Could this possibly be true? Could it possibly be enforced? Given the strong national ties that China has built with African nations in the last two years coupled with the fact that many Olympic athletes (and their families) hail from African descent — not to mention that such a policy would be despicable and horrendous PR for a country looking to improve its image — it sounds like, perhaps, some racist in the Beijing government went out on his own on this one.

We hope strong denials from Beijing are in the works.

Authorities Deny Banning Blacks And Mongolians From Beijing Bars During Olympics
July 20, 2008 3:12 p.m. EST
Amy Beeman - AHN

Beijing, China (AHN) -- Reports have surfaced that the Chinese Government is forcing bar owners to ban blacks and Mongolians from their bars during the Olympic games next month.

The pledges are said to be secret, but The South China Daily reported that some bar owners, especially those in Sanlitun, an area known for its nightlife, said they were forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to allow black people into their bars. Mongolians are also reportedly banned.

Some police and bar owners deny this ban is in place, but some Africans reported being charged double what other's pay as entry fees, and others recently told the World Net Daily that they were forced to show their passports prior to being allowed into a bar. No one else had to show such identification. The South China Daily quoted one bar owner as saying police came to him and made him agree, "not to serve black people or Mongolians."

It is reported that Chinese officials regard blacks and Mongolians as largely responsible for drug dealing and other criminal activity, and this ban is another measure to control what the rest of the world sees when all eyes are on Beijing for 17 days during the summer games.

On the Chinese website Danwei it was written that these bans are highly unlikely, however, unless they were done by low-level police officers.

Court: Wisconsin law bans sex with dead bodies
By RYAN J. FOLEY , Associated Press
July 10, 2008

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin law bans sex with dead bodies, the state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in reinstating charges against three men accused of digging up a corpse to have sex with it.

The court waded into the grisly case after lower court judges ruled nothing in state law banned necrophilia. Those decisions prompted public outrage in Wisconsin and on the Internet, where one blogger wrote: "Doing the dirty with the dead OK in Wisconsin."

Not anymore, the court ruled in a 5-2 decision.

Justice Patience Roggensack, writing a majority opinion with three other justices, said state law bans sexual intercourse with anyone who does not give consent whether a victim is dead or alive at the time. Dead bodies obviously can't give consent, she said.

"A reasonably well-informed person would understand the statute to prohibit sexual intercourse with a dead person," she wrote.

The decision brings Wisconsin's law in line with more than 20 other states who prohibit necrophilia or the abuse of a corpse, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. California joined that group in 2004 after prosecutors said they couldn't bring charges in some cases without an official ban.

The law in Wisconsin had been murky, and two dissenting justices insisted Wednesday that lawmakers did not mean to ban necrophilia but to allow assault charges when someone was raped and then killed.

The ruling reinstates attempted sexual assault charges against twin brothers Nicholas and Alexander Grunke and Dustin Radke, all 22. They face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Armed with shovels, a crowbar and a box of condoms, the men went to a cemetery in Cassville in southwestern Wisconsin in 2006 to remove the body of a 20-year-old woman killed the week before in a motorcycle crash, police said.

One of them had seen an obituary photo of the pretty nursing assistant and asked the others for help digging up her corpse so he could have sexual intercourse with it, prosecutors said. They used the shovels to reach her grave but were unable to pry the concrete vault open and fled after a car drove into the cemetery.

The men were discovered by a police officer responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the cemetery and charged with attempted sexual assault and theft.

A judge dismissed the assault charges, saying Wisconsin law does not criminalize necrophilia. An appeals court upheld that decision, ruling state law was ambiguous on that point but the most reasonable explanation was that it did not.

Those decisions were wrong, Roggensack wrote, because the law clearly says assault victims can be dead or alive.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, whose office represented prosecutors in the appeal, praised the decision.

"Words matter and the Legislature chose its words carefully to extend the sexual assault law to those heinous circumstances where a dead person is sexually assaulted, whether or not the defendant killed the victim," he said. "Necrophilia is criminal in Wisconsin."

In a dissent, Justice Ann Walsh Bradley called the conduct heinous and said it should be banned for public policy reasons. But she said lawmakers did not do that when they wrote the law in question in 1986.

She said the law was meant to allow prosecutors to bring sexual assault charges in rape-murder cases when they could not prove whether the victim was alive at the time of the rape. That's the same conclusion reached by the lower court judges, who she noted were "reasonably well-informed."

Jefren Olsen, a public defender who represented Radke, said he agreed with Bradley's dissent and the majority opinion was "dead wrong."

"Obviously, the facts are rather notorious and not the easiest to deal with," he said. "I assume that had some impact."

Suzanne Edwards, a lawyer representing Nicholas Grunke, said she was disappointed in the decision. The men will be arraigned on the charges and have a chance to plead not guilty, she said, emphasizing the prosecutors' contentions were only allegations right now.

Laura Tennessen, 20, died in a motorcycle accident and became somewhat of an internet celebrity, after three Wisconsin men attempted to dig up her body in order to have sex with her.

Laura Tennessen was a nursing assistant, who died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. She was a passenger on the Honda motorcycle, driven by Thomas Sweet, 20, when they were flung from the motorcycle when Sweet lost control. Deputies stated that alcohol and speed were the main factors in the accident, and that neither Tennessen or Sweet were wearing helmets. Tennessen died from her injuries, while Sweet only sustained minor injuries.

As sad as the accident is, it is only the first part of a story that just gets “more sick”.

A few days after Tennessen's death, three Wisconsin men spotted her obituary, and obviously found her quite attractive, and decided to dig up Tennessen's body to have sex with her. Nicholas Grunke ( son of a Methodist minister), his twin brother Alex, and their friend Dustin Radke all plotted this disgusting act.

Police said the three Wisconsin men were carrying shovels, a crowbar, and a box of condoms to the cemetary to dig up the dead body of Laura Tennessen, who had died the week before in the motorcycle wreck.

Nicholas Grunke had viewed her photo in the obituary and asked his brother and friend to aid in helping dig up her corpse so that he could have sexual intercourse with it.

The three guys used shovels to reach her grave, but were not able to pry open the vault. After seeing the abandoned car, police questioned Alex Grunke, who was acting very nervous, and he admitted to police the scheme, and that his cohorts were digging up Tennessen's coffin.

When the police arrived at the gravesite, Nicolas Grunke and Radke were gone, though cops noticed that a hole had been dug down to the concrete vault encasing the woman's coffin. Nicholas Grunke and Radke were later arrested while walking about eight miles from the cemetery.

Wisconsin passed a law yesterday, banning sex with dead bodies, and reinstating charges against the three men. The court had to go into the nasty case after lower court judges in Wisconsin said there were no laws there banning necrophilia. The lower court decisions outraged the public, and a state lawmaker pushed to make having sex with a corpse a crime.

In Wisconsin, the law now states that sex acts with dead people are considered illegal, as the corpse is not able to give consent. Sounds crazy, but I guess that is true!

This ruling now reinstates the sexual assault charges against the twin brothers, Nicolas and Alexander Grunke and friend Dustin Radke, all guys are 22. The charges could carry a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.

The judge, Patience Roggensack, said sexual intercourse is banned with anyone that cannot give consent, “whether a victim is dead or alive at the time”. And continued saying, “A reasonably well-informed person would understand the statue to prohibit sexual intercourse with a dead person, ” she wrote.

This legal ruling brings Wisconsin into line with more than 20 other states that prohibit necrophilia or the abuse of a corpse.

With sickos like this around, perhaps we don't want to look too sexy or attractive in our obituary photos. What do you guys think about this case?
