BEARS 31 Seattle 10.. GAME PREVIEW AND WHO YA GOT???

Well the bears sit On top of the NFCN and tied for the best record in football at 4-1 currently. The next 3 games are the time to bear down and open up a bigger lead on the rivals and make themselves contenders for Home field for the playoffs.Seattle has been an up/down team for the last few years and has continued under Carroll, a good home team and awful road team and even worse after a bye. Jay Cutler will be back this week and as such the "O" should be able to back on track and hopefully compliment the run game, not put it on the back burner again.

    Fun facts

In the 21 games they’ve played after bye weeks since the schedule began including in-season breaks in 1990, the Hawks have won only five times … just twice since 1998. their losses have come by an average margin of 13.9 points

Bears RB matt forte is one of just five players in NFL history with a 65-plus yard rushing touchdown and 85-plus yard receiving touchdown in the same season. ...

Seattle is 6-20 on the road the last 4 years, winning 3, 2, 1 and zero so far in 2010 games each year.

    BEARS ON OFFENSE

With the Discovery of the running game sunday, and getting Cutler back, here's to hoping martz doesn't go back to a 60/40 pass/run but more 50-55% and take avantage of play action more. Seattle pass "D' really bad, currently ranked 31st( 302 ypg), and ya know Martz salivating to put up a big day on it.because tems are passing the seattle, their run "D" numbers look good( 72.5 game), but think more a function of teams passing, than actually stopping the run. Looks for a big day from olsen as seattle has been hurt by Te's and fast WR's all year

    BEARS ON DEFENSE

Seattle Offense is 28th by yards and 18 by points, and 29th rushing. The seattle attack took a hit with branch being traded and will be Stokely and Butler as the starters and big fat mike willams as the slot WR, with the dangerous Carlson at TE, who urlacher should be able to handle in the middle as seattle likes to Do. Hasselbeck on the downside of career, and if you get to him early, he will fold his tent. peppers and company need to get the pressure early. Seattle's run game has been abysmal, but with the addition of Lynch this week, should see a bump in the run game, but all year the bears have been very Strout against the run( 3rd), so expect that to continue

    BEARS ON SPECIAL TEAMS

A real good week for Toub to show how good his Coverage unit is, with leon washington having a probowl type of season as a returner, looks for graham and iwuh to try and shut him down. The 1-2 punch of manning.knox as kick returners and hester on punts has been very good all year and almost broke another 2 against the panthers- here's to hoping they can break one this week

    BEARS 31 SEATTLE 10

    Cutler 21-30 for 280 yards 2 td's

    Forte 20 rushes 110 yards, 1 TD

    Olsen 6 catches 75 yards, 1 TD

    knowx 5 catches 110 yards 1 TD

    Peppers 2 sacks

    WHO YA GOT AND WHY?

Road tests ahead for Seahawks over next six games

Four of the Seahawks' next six games are on the road, including Saturday's game in Chicago and a Nov. 21 test in New Orleans. The road test will determine this season's fate of a Seattle team that has struggled away from home.

RENTON — The Seahawks returned to the practice field this week, resuming their season under mostly sunny skies with pressure looming on the horizon.

That pressure is the result of this year's schedule, which calls for Seattle to play four of its next six games on the road, beginning Sunday in Chicago.

This is the fulcrum of Seattle's season, the stretch that will determine whether the Seahawks will play meaningful games come December or just look for meaningful growth.

"It's going to be very difficult," coach Pete Carroll said. "These games are enormously challenging, and it's not going to be easy in Chicago."

It won't be easy in New Orleans against the defending Super Bowl champs on Nov. 21, either, or in Arizona on Nov. 14. Even Seattle's game in Oakland on Halloween is a trouble spot, given the way the Raiders played Sunday against San Diego.

For a team with Seattle's baggage of road losses, this amounts to a two-month gauntlet as Seattle plays only two homes in the 61 days following their Week 3 victory over San Diego.

Seattle is 2-2 because of a potent combination of defense and decibels. The Seahawks have forced seven turnovers in two home victories.

Staying in the playoff chase will require more than just success at home, though. Seattle must find a way to keep from getting run over on the road. The Seahawks haven't lost their last four road games dating to last season so much as they've been flattened, outscored 133-34.

Bye week actually helps Carroll and crew get it together. Still, Bears are better team and rightfully win.

Injury update: Linebacker Lance Briggs sat out Wednesday's practice after spraining his left ankle at Carolina. Cornerback Charles Tillman (calf) and safety Major Wright (hamstring) also sat out, although Wright did some drills on a side field for the first time since suffering the injury in Week 2.

While tackle Chris Williams returned to full practice off a hamstring strain, guard Roberto Garza sat out awaiting arthroscopic knee surgery. Brian Urlacher (groin) was limited but doesn't anticipate it affecting his status for Sunday.

For the Seahawks, tight end John Carlson (non-injury related), defensive end Dexter Davis (hamstring) and cornerback Marcus Trufant (ankle) were all held out.

    Bears-Seahawks breakdown

    Bears vs. Seattle Seahawks
    Noon Sunday, FOX-TV, AM-780

Northwest Herald sports writer Tom Musick breaks down this week’s Bears game.

Bears’ rushing offense vs. Seahawks’ rushing defense

The Bears erupted for 218 rushing yards against Carolina in Week 5, but Seattle owns the NFL’s No. 2 rushing defense. Can Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz stay patient with the running game against talented Seahawks linebackers Lofa Tatupu, Aaron Curry and David Hawthorne?

    Edge: Seahawks

Bears’ passing offense vs. Seahawks’ passing defense
Jay Cutler has received clearance to start Sunday, and the quarterback insists that he won’t change his aggressive style of play. Cutler has all of the necessary skills to burn a mediocre Seahawks secondary, but in order for him to make throws, the Bears’ revamped offensive line must keep him upright.

    Edge: Bears

Seahawks’ rushing offense vs. Bears’ rushing defense
Marshawn Lynch is set to make his Seahawks debut after he arrived in a trade from the Buffalo Bills earlier this month. The Bears are not intimidated. Lovie Smith’s group is one spot behind Seattle with the NFL’s No. 3 rushing defense, limiting opponents to 78.6 yards a game.

    Edge: Bears

Seahawks’ passing offense vs. Bears’ passing defense
The Bears are No. 17 passing defense in the NFL, but they are tied for fifth with seven interceptions. Look for Bears pass defenders to have a good day against the Seahawks, who have a pedestrian quarterback (Matt Hasselbeck) and below average receivers (Mike Williams and Deon Butler).

    Edge: Bears

    Sunday’s winner

The Bears return to Soldier Field, where they already have beaten division rivals Detroit and Green Bay. Both of those teams possess more talent than the Seahawks, who are a work in progress in Pete Carroll’s first year at the helm. The Seahawks might get in a few licks on defense, but it’s tough to see their offense keeping pace with the Bears.

    Tom Musick’s pick: Bears 24, Seahawks 10

    Waddle: Bears can
 run away with North

    How does 4-1 feel?

It wasn’t pretty last week, but in the rough-and-tumble NFL, they don’t hand out style points. Truth is, I think it was entirely possible for the Bears to beat Carolina without anybody under center.

In fact, after the Todd Collins experience, many believe the Bears did, in fact, play without a quarterback last week. The only thing that matters now is the Bears got a win, are atop the NFC North, and might have discovered a running game in the process.

With quarterback Jay Cutler back in the huddle, the question is whether they will continue to run the football.

“Balance” might be my favorite word in the football dictionary, and it certainly is high on my list of priorities. With Mike Martz in charge and Cutler at the controls, it’s quite obvious that this is a throw-first offense.

But the mad scientist who conjures up the weekly game plan cannot completely ignore the running game. It’s not a good strategy and it’s not good for the health of his star quarterback. If the seven-step drop still is going to be a large component of the offense, the Bears must use the play-action pass, but that won’t work if opposing defenses don’t believe you actually will run the ball.

The more balanced you are, the less likely you are to make big mistakes.
One of the most encouraging developments from Sunday was the 21⁄2 sack performance from defensive end Israel Idonije.

With the release of Mark Anderson, the job was Idonije’s to run with, and he seized the opportunity.

Life on the other side of Julius Peppers should provide a season’s worth of one-on-one matchups. If Idonije continues to deliver, you can bet Peppers’ sack total will rise dramatically.

Word this week is that Chris Williams might be moved from left tackle to left guard. When they used the 14th pick of the draft on Williams in 2008, the Bears thought they had their left tackle for the next decade. Moving him inside to guard isn’t ideal, but the goal is to get your best five linemen in the game. With that in mind, I applaud the creativity.

The NFC North is up for grabs. At 3-2, the Packers haven’t been the football machine that many predicted would represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

The loss of running back Ryan Grant in Week 2 was enormous. With tight end Jermichael Finley possibly out for the year, the Packers’ one-dimensional attack is without its most dynamic target.

In Minnesota, year two of the Brett Favre era hasn’t been a good one. His off-the-field behavior might result in a suspension. Either way, it should be a rocky ride for the next month or so.

It’s critical that the Bears win now. Barring injury, they should be favored in each of their next seven games before a treacherous final month of the season.
As for Sunday, the Seahawks are no prize, but if the Bears cough it up four times, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will make them pay. He’s no longer mobile and doesn’t handle pressure well. If the Bears get to him, they get to 5-1.

As we saw, life without Cutler isn’t a lot of fun, but last week should have provided a much-needed confidence boost for the other 52 guys in that locker room. I expect a more balanced approach on offense and another dominant performance on defense.

    b]Waddle’s pick: Bears 24, Seahawks 17.[/b]

Tom Waddle appears from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays on the “Waddle and Silvy Show” on WMVP AM-1000. He writes a weekly column on the Bears for the Northwest Herald.
