    Chelsea FC Thread

    Manchester City defeat Chelsea to claim 2012 FA Community Shield


    English football opened their new season at Villa Park in Birmingham, England with the traditional Football Association Community Shield match. Defending English Premier League Champions, Manchester City took on FA Cup winner’s Chelsea in what would become a heated match of two title contenders for the coming 2012-13 campaign.

    While the 2012 London Olympics were coming to a close, the English Premier League was kicking off with a bang. Manchester City had Chelsea on the ropes in the opening half, but a 40th minute striker from Fernando Torres against the run of play saw the game blown wide open.

    However, a red car for Chelsea defender, Branislav Ivanovic in the closing minutes of the first 45 minutes would once again change the fortune of the game and the opening three fixtures of the coming season. Ivanovic not only sent his side down to ten men but also now faces a three match ban for the sending off.

    Manchester City came back with a vengeance in the second half as they took the game to their undermanned opponents. Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure would draw the Citizens level on the 53rd minute with a powerful shot steming from a poor John Terry clearance.

    Chelsea was now on the back foot and Manchester City would take the lead only minutes later thanks to Carlos Tevez. The Argentine finally looks like the Tevez of old for the club after settling back in and pairing up with fellow countryman Sergio Aguero in attack.

    The hits would keep coming for the Blues as former Arsenal man Samir Nasri would put the game out of reach with a third goal for the defending EPL champs in the 65th minute.
    From there on out City toyed with Chelsea. The London side and defending FA Cup and UEFA Champions League winners earned a late consolation goal through young defender Ryan Bertrand, but it would be little appease the club that have high hopes for the coming season.

    As Manchester City ascended into the stands to claim the first piece of silverware of the new season, Chelsea looked ready to prove their critics wrong when they kick off the regular season next weekend against Wigan Athletic.

    Chelsea came out overly and uncharacteristically aggressive to open the match...seemed out to prove something; a real chip on their shoulder that didn't serve them well...

    The Torres goal was sweet, but Ivanovic's red card shortly thereafter was ugly...I like that idea of being more aggressive, but not at the expense of playing dumb football...

    I am just glad the season is back underway...pretty soon and my perfect Sundays of Chelsea soccer in the morning and Bears Football in the afternoon will be here...

    Branislav Ivanovic will not be suspended for the beginning of our Barclays Premier League campaign, despite his red card in the Community Shield on Sunday.

    The defender received a straight red card from referee Kevin Friend for a tackle late in the first half at Villa Park yesterday, but the FA disciplinary department does not class the game as a competitive first team fixture, and so the Serbian will be free to play at Wigan next weekend.

    The 28-year-old will however be banned for three non-first team games, from August 26 onwards. Additionally, yellow cards picked up by Frank Lampard, John Mikel Obi, Ryan Bertrand, Ramires and Ashley Cole will not count towards their season's tallies.

    I was never really into soccer until earlier this year. I want to a woman's friendly Japan's national team (Olympic silver!) vs. Australia... and had a blast with the game, atmosphere, etc...

    I'm not "hooked" yet, but I am starting to enjoy it.

    I've never enjoyed woman's soccer. I think I'd if there was a lingerie league like with Amercian Football.

    pretty soon and my perfect Sundays of Chelsea soccer in the morning and Bears Football in the afternoon will be here...
    Oh yea Super Sundays inc! Aalborg BK or Bayern in the afternoon and Bears dinner/evening/night.. Nothing beats that.

    I have say I am pretty hooked at this point...and it really came out of left field...up until about 2 years ago, I looked down on soccer pretty hard...stupid, boring, etc, etc...typical American anti-soccer bias...

    The Bears are still number #1 in the my heart, but Chelsea is a very close 2nd...

    However, all things being equal, I would much rather watch a soccer game in general, over a football game in general...

    The good thing about soccer is that it's way more than 16 games a year. I rather have football over soccer, perhaps it's because I'm so used to it. But football seem to have more action.

    Just to throw in two cents:

    I went to a Cowboys game, loved it, we beat 'em and the Cowboys fans were cordial afterwards.

    My buddy went to Real Madrid vs. Barcelona and was concerned a riot was gonna break out if Madrid didn't win.

    Just anecdotal, and I almost did get jumped after we lost to the Texans in '08, but I prefer the atmosphere of a football game anyday. Would like to still see a soccer (not american, lol) game in person, just to see the difference in the vibes and atmosphere.

    The stadium here in Tokyo sold more wine than beer. Everybody had one of those big-ass 16oz plastic cups full of red wine.

    Kinda neat, actually. Different. Not sure how much wine you'll find for sale at an NFL game.

    Of course, it seemed like most of the fans were college girls. At least that was the best guess my leering eyes could determine based on school uniforms.

    Being on a soccer stadium and on a football stadium is very big. In soccer you sing chants for your team, have loads of flags etc etc and firework now and then. I havn't seen that in football. Only that you make shit loads of noise when the other team has the ball. And then theres the school bands in college/high school if I'm corret.

    Ofcause I don't know how the atmosphere is in football since I never been to a game, outside my local Esbjerg Hurricanes. With like 100 people max. but the impression I got from the telly and such tells me I rather watch a soccer and jump around.
    This happened on a stadium in Denmark.
    This is the most hated club in Denmark but they really have some loyal fans. Probberly the best in Scandinavia.
