    Tragedy In Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – A terrifying shooting at an Aurora movie theater overnight left 12 people dead and about 50 people hurt.

The shooting happened at about 12:30 a.m. at the Town Center in Aurora at the Century 16 theater on East Alameda Avenue. Reports first came in that there were explosions in the theater showing the movie “The Dark Knight Rises.” Shots then rang out, and a frantic scene followed.

Police said 12 people died and 50 people were hurt. Ten people died inside the theater. A three-month-old was among those who were hurt, but the baby is expected to be okay.

“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Chief Dan Oates said.
The midnight showing of the movie had just started when the violence began. Donovan Tate and his girlfriend escaped from the packed theater.

“There was this one guy on all fours crawling. There was this girl spitting up blood. There were bullet holes in some people’s backs, in some people’s arms. There was one guy who was just stripped down to his boxers. It looked like he had been shot in the back or something,” Tate told CBS4.

Aurora police said victims have been taken to six different hospitals. They wrote in a news release that “many were rushed immediately to hospitals in police cars by responding officers. The injured and dead include a wide age range.”

Police said they have a suspect in custody — James Holmes — and that explosives were found at the suspect’s home. They said they aren’t sure if there was a second suspect and are continuing to investigate.

Witnesses and people who were evacuated from apartments nearby were being taken to Gateway High School at 1300 S. Sable Blvd. for interviews and also to reunite with friends and family. RTD provided buses that were used to move those people back and forth from the scene of the shooting to the school.

CBS News reported that President Barack Obama was informed by Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan about the shooting at 3:30 a.m.

The incident is one of the worst mass shootings in the United States since 32 people were killed in 2007 on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va. In 1999, 13 people were killed in the Columbine High School massacre that happened about 25 miles southwest of Friday morning’s attack.

AURORA — James Wilburn was sitting in the second row of Theater 9 after midnight, when the emergency door to his right opened and a man entered.

"He was dressed in black," Wilburn said, "Wearing a flack jacket and a gas mask."

The man was carrying a shotgun and had a rifle strapped to his back, Wilburn said. Then the man dropped a canister to the floor and a noxious gas spewed out. He raised the shotgun and repeatedly fired toward the back of the theater.

Wilburn and three friends dove to the floor, hiding behind the seatbacks in front of them. The gunman was only five or six feet away, the Aurora resident said. Everyone was running while the movie, which had only started a few minutes before, played on.

Once the shotgun was empty, the gunman calmly dropped it to the floor, took the rifle and went on firing. Wilburn heard 30-some shots.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Naya Thompson and her 22-year-old boyfriend Derrick Poage were running for their lives.

She said the gas spread and the gunman may have dropped two canisters. "It was like a tear gas," Thompson said. "I was coughing and choking and I couldn't breathe."

Hours afterward, Poage had blood splashed on his pants. He was in his stocking feet because he had lost his shoes as he fled the theater.

I guess we don't get all of the nut jobs here but we get more than our share. This is just one more sad and horrifying incident and a long line of them nationally.

About 1:00 AM this morning I heard sirens going off around my place like there was a war starting somewhere and they kept up for over an hour. I'm only a block off a very heavily traveled crosstown highway. I was up about an hour ago and as always one of the first things I do is check local news and that's when I found out what the sirens were all about.

One of the major medical trauma centers is just three blocks away from me and the reports say that a number of the victims were brought there even though where I live is a good ten miles from where the shootings took place. Initial reports were 14 dead now they seem to be saying 12 dead but in addition there are over 50 injured some critically so the death toll may rise.

What a sad way to wake to what would otherwise have been a beautiful day. What makes a person tick that they could ever do shit like this. This wasn't some teenage kid who was being harassed and embarrassed by HS classmates like the bastards who shot up Columbine HS. This guy was 24 years old.

They say his apartment may be booby trapped with more bombs or other explosives. How can anyone be so angry at the world to have the desire to take innocent lives this way? Just put a gun to your own head if your in that much pain or get help. Jesus this just makes me sick.

It's a shame people are already blaming the right, the left and hollywood. No mainstream political philosophy condones this, and as George Carlin once said "People were killing each other long before movies; they (movies) just made them more creative.

police/law enforcement cannot stop a criminal from owning a gun. Stupidist lib idea ever. Police are reactive and all to often to late to a crime, they cannot take care of you.

This has absolutely ruined my day. I'm livid and saddened for all these people and their family. I'm saddened for his family. This jag did this for nothing other then to try and get his face in the paper. I really wish the news would stop placing the names and faces of the shooters in these instances. If they want to be famous/infamous stop giving them their prize.

Do the criminals turn in their guns? Or just the law abiding citizens who will no longer be able to protect themselves?

So why have them if you gotta defend yourself anyway? Can't you just shoot the guy and if he survives then just have some lawyers to change him for the crime?
But yes it is horrible for the families and for their friends etc.. horrible..

No but if you can go into a shop and buy a gun no wonder why there's so many shootings in U.S. if you had to "hunt" a guy down to get a gun then it would be a lot harder, and there would be fewer shootings.
This guy have only got pulled over for driving to fast, he was a student and was close to finish his edcuation, now let's say this wasn't planned but just impluse a few days ago or so, then isn't it a bit stupid he can get a gun in a matter of day? Rather than having a hard time looking for a gun in thecriminal environment?

I don't get the hole "protect yourself" mentallity really.. there is NO reason to have police if you just can shoot the guy that are threating you.
