Mike, you should be able to shut off the cold water valve going into the tank, or trace it backwards to the main water valve for the house. It may mean an extra 5 minutes for you to get some water (turn on main, then get your water, then turn off main), but it beats letting water flood your house and do damage.

Thats the valve I tried shutting off.. and it snapped. I'll be replacing it tomorrow.. with the new unit.
