This is not a debate, but rather a tribute thread, tear it down if you wish, but the point is that we wish you wouldn't.
Every single personal account I have heard (I have none), has Payton as a very gracious and humble man who didn't like the spotlight. All have a similar occurence that changed as soon as a personal interaction became a public one (as though he was avoiding the attention).

Maybe. I just have this feeling that he was reserved in public, and didn't like the spotlight, so people naturally saw him as a good guy. I've heard a lot of things saying otherwise while he was away from the cameras. The problem is that his death made him more of a legend than his life, so we'll never really know the true story. I love that he played for the Bears, and I love all the memories and whatnot, but there's something about him and the way he was that makes me curious about how he really was.
