Heard Martz on the score this morning.

I like what I heard from him. If they post the interview on the score, I'll link it in this thread. In a nutshell, here's what he said...

-He said he planned on allowing Cutler to move around... that he's never had a QB who can move like him. He also wanted to expand Cutler's horizons.

    - He plans on using Hester in the slot, the way he did Az Hakim. He thinks it's the perfect place for Hester and that he can create horrid mismatches that way. He thinks Hester can be what Hakim was and much more. He also thinks that having Hester in the slot will allow him to excel at special teams. I like hearing that... I think it's where Hester should be.

    - He thinks there's a lot of potential in our receiving corps.

    - Anyone who wants to learn the system and dedicate themselves can learn it thoroughly by camp.

    - He's excited to work with Tice and the rest of the staff.

    - He talked about Olsen, but it's the only part I missed because a phone call came in as I was driving. So I want to re-listen to that part.

I like what Martz had to say. It made me feel better that he planned on using players to their strengths. He didn't say 'give it time' or any of that. He had the tone that he's going to demand a lot of the offensive players. And while people might scoff at that because there's some knuckleheads on this offense, I still think it's the best way to approach it. He wants to push them to their limits. A lot of people want Cowher here and a big reason is that he demands the best from his players. Well, from the sounds of it, Martz has a similar approach on offense. I think whether this staff fails or succeeds next season, that our offense is going to learn a lot. If we can get a couple of new linemen in here, I'm at least pretty optimistic that the offense can become something.

The mad mechanic is already working with his tools out, ratcheting his plans for Cutler and his WR's. I like it as well that Hester will be used in the slot as you mentioned.Olsen figures as a major component in the Martz system as Martz has mentioned, so bring on the 2010 season, but please get at least two more legitimate OL men to protect our franchise QB. I figure Forte has a monster season with all the attention that will be paid to Martz,s aerial attack, which btw fits quite nicely into one of Forte's strengths.

i like what i heard. Maybe it wont be a bad hiring. if it was for more then one year id be for sure happy but i dont like the hiring if martz will be gone next year. its a system that can work if its more then 1 year.

but needless to say martz impressed me.

Here's part of the interview via the Sun-Times

    Martz in wide-ranging interview
By Neil Hayes on February 9, 2010 9:08 AM

Mike Martz was interviewed extensively on the "Mully and Hanley Show this morning. Here are the highlights:

On Jay Cutler's reputation for being "difficult":

"I just didn't see Jay being difficult to deal with at all. Really elite players all have that in them, a sense of wanting to be perfect, wanting things to be absolutely right and when they're not right they get frustrated like we all do. But that's common, with Kurt [Warner], with all of them. I don't see that in Jay. What I saw when I met him was a remarkably bright young man who was well schooled in the game beyond his years, actually, beyond his experience, and a really eager guy to get involved with what we want to do on offense. For me, there was a quick connection between the two of us."

    On Cutler's ability:

"He can take us into some areas at the position we've never been before just because of his athleticism and ability to throw the ball on the move. ... You can't put a fence around Jay and say this is what he can do because he's too good of a player. There's nothing this guy can't accomplish at a high level in the passing game."

    On comparisons with Warner:

"I don't know if I've ever been around anybody with [Jay's} skill or innate ability to throw the football. He's got Kurt's accuracy with a stronger arm. His mobility is unusual. What Kurt has that I see in Jay that is real unusual is the ability to make terrific throws under duress ... More importantly, he has a unique ability to see things down the field and react to them very quickly. What he sees is above average. It's way up above what normally real good quarterbacks see, and how well he digests that information is really remarkable.

This is only about a third of the interview. There will be more to come but I wanted to get this up quickly.

you took the words out of my mouth. I listened to the interview and felt a hell of a lot better about the upcoming season.....Martz is a very intellegent coach and he is ten times the coach Turner is.

at least someone has the balls to do it. I wonder how JA and Lovie will take this news about their 40 mil dollar baby.......

funny how when I was saying this Im a dumb message poster(the two of you who said know who you are). Now it will be a reality.

the part that I think will be tricky is the oline. It is crap. I still dont think we have a number one receiver for his system

If he's retooling his O, I hope he uses a chainsaw to hack it down to a mere several hundred pages. Hester should be a slot guy, that was obvious, he's not a #1. Forte should fit into his O well, not sure how Olsen or the OL will do. Cutler has the ability to throw picks under duress, Martz needs to wake up if he believes Cutler has matured to the point of making great plays while under durress. Get Cutler moving around and buy him time b/c the OL isn't good enough to do it themselves.
Much like Obama, the talk is good, I'll wait for the actual goods to be delivered.
