Giving Martz time to save QB might be Bears' best chance to get offense to Super level

There was a telling moment during the news conference Jan. 5 announcing offensive coordinator Ron Turner's firing that illustrated the widening gulf between Bears coach Lovie Smith and Grabowskis everywhere.
Smith was asked how he could expect the same core players playing the same scheme to bring dramatically improved results after three years of mediocrity. His answer rang of the same incredulousness that dripped from the question. That's what this relationship has come to: Smith can't fathom the pessimism of outsiders who are convinced his optimism is delusional.
But those tempted to root against the Bears, hoping Smith will be replaced after next season, are missing a lesson the Super Bowl reinforced: The Bears need this to work out. More important, quarterback Jay Cutler needs this to work out. It's still early in his career, but he could reach the point of no return sooner than anyone expected.
