Ditka: Can Jay Cutler be considered an elite QB?

Ditka: Can Jay Cutler be considered an elite QB?

    CSNChicago.com

Are you surprised as everyone else that the Bears are 3-0?

Mike Ditka: Well I thought the Green Bay Packers were the best team in the division and I knew that if the Bears could beat them; I mean I think it goes a long way. It's only three games into the season. I think people are foolish to get excited if people remember about '85 we didn't start fast man we came back and had a couple games... I like what they’re doing building their confidence. I think the quarterback is getting his confidence back... I like what the defense is doing. I like they're really getting after people. Urlacher is playing as good of football as I've ever seen him play.

Will Jay Cutler ever be considered an elite quarterback in the league?

Ditka: Well you know the only way you can really define elite is to win a Super Bowl. I mean you have to say basically if you have the numbers and win the Super Bowl then you can be considered elite. But let me say with Jay, talent-wise, I don’t think anybody has anymore talent than him. I think the problem with Jay is I think body language sometimes and you gotta be the leader all the time. In good times, in bad times it doesn't matter. When you make a mistake you have to have your head up; you must be the guy in control. Sometimes I don't see that. And I think that if he gets down, his teammates are gonna get down so he has to lead by example. I've played with guys, I played with Roger Staubach, (Jim) McMahon whether you liked him or hated him, you saw what you got and it was pretty good.

What are your thoughts on the Tommie Harris benching?

Ditka: Yeah but what's he really done lately? What's he done for the years actually? Nothing. Somewhere along the way you gotta say enough's enough. Let me give one of these young guys a chance and take the guy that’s just taking up space and making money and not doing anything. And I'm not knocking Tommie Harris I mean I don't know what's the matter with him or what isn't the matter with him but I know right now that he is not at least the way the bears want him to produce. And not set the example and probably not working out the way the Bears want him to do so I don't blame them one bit.

How big of an impact has Julius Peppers had on the Bears defense?

Ditka: When you're a guy with his reputation you're gonna get more than one guy blocking on you and when you have more than one guy blocking on you then the other side is going to have a better chance to get to the quarterback and put pressure on the quarterback. And I think this is a lot of what's happening. I mean conceptually the defense what they're doing concept-wise is good. They know when to attack and they know when to play zone and drop back.

    Ravens defense vs. ’85 Bears

Ditka: We played three games. Two games in the playoffs and one in the Super Bowl and our defense gave up 10 points. If you think about it that's unheard of. They shut out the Rams and they shut out the Giants and they gave up ten points in the Super Bowl and that was probably because of field position. So when you see a defense play and be that dominant and create and put the fear of god in the quarterback's eyes. And hey, Brian Billick can think what he wants to think. I hate the term greatest anyway but all I'll say is that it was a pretty darn good one. It coulda lined up with anyone in any era. Back then, back in the 40's and back in the year 2020.

I agree with Coach...it IS all body language. After rewatching the game on NFLN, i noticed that essentially most, if not all, of his poor throws were because he threw from his back foot. If he can work on that and try to teach himself to NOT sling it down field when he is in that position, and simply throw it away instead..it will elevate him to the next level and cut down on alot oh his mistakes in games.

think some better protection will also help, cutler also at times need to work on that "mental clock" and get his passes off quicker, each week have 2-3 plays where the blocking there to start- but he hold it too long and really get clobbered or sacked, which don't want to see the hits in addition to getting it out earlier

Well protection ALWAYS helps lol...Cutler is damn near Dangerous when he has time to throw. but yeah, his back foot throws are due to teh fact that his protection fails him and he is rushed to make a throw, unfortunately he sometimes throws when he shouldnt...which i guess is the mark of a true gunslinger, but it usually ends up biting him in the ass instead. Great jay isnt so Great off the back foot.

Always like Ditka and his "tell it like it is" style. Hard to disagree with anything he said in this interview.

Pretty much agree w/him. But I think Manning has more pure talent then J does; part of that his athletic skills, most of it is intellegence(PM might be the smartest to play the position), and part of that is leadership. Jay, w/an OL and a legit #1 he can rely on to get him out of trouble has got to be one of the most dangerous qb's in the league though.

you know what I get why Manning is always considered the best. But look at how much is invested in that offense compared to other teams. Manning and Brees have the biggest offensive investments in the nfl. Not that is a bad thing the team is built around them but still to call them the most inteligent and best with the talent they give those two idk. Look at what Brady did early when he had shit invested in the offense. Even now all he has is Moss the rest you could say he made them. Look at Rivers and what he has done. He has jack shit this year and is still putting up numbers. I give mroe respect to those guys. Then you look at Romo three stellar wrs, three good rb, and a bad ass te and he cant do anything with that lol.

while agree Peyton the best in the game, not sure better athletic skills.. Cutler a MUCH better runner, ever see manning scramble? it is not pretty. think their arm's comparable.. manning just so far, mentally alot better, but he's also in his 10th year, so not as far a comparision.

let culter be in the SAME system for a few consective years for a better comparision.. I mean peyton been running the same system since came in league and not changing 3 in 4 years and different people each year

Stop being gay for Brady, that's a QB friendly system. Rivers is legitimately impressing me.
