Hanie a bright spot in gloomy loss

Hanie a bright spot in gloomy loss

3rd-string QB fares well after Cutler, Collins injured

Maybe the only offensive player on the Bears who enhanced his standing on the roster Sunday night was Caleb Hanie, who made the difficult entrance into the game in the fourth quarter after backup quarterback Todd Collins was lifted following a crunching hit by Giants linebacker Michael Boley that left him with a neck stinger.

Collins, who has been operating as the No. 2 behind Jay Cutler since he was signed in August, is expected to be fine this week. It's impossible to determine how coach Lovie Smith will stack the depth chart, though.

"I was pleased with what Caleb did," Smith said. "He came in and made a couple good passes. That is something that we liked, at least seeing Caleb come in."

Collins struggled in his 1½ quarters of work, completing 4 of 11 passes for 36 yards with one interception. If Cutler cannot start Sunday at Carolina -- and early returns, including Smith's reaction make it seem likely he will be ready after suffering a concussion against the Giants -- the Bears will have to choose between Hanie and Collins. Because only the starter gets reps with the starters in practice, they could benefit this week from time spent doing something other than directing the scout team.

I'm just going to play it by ear this week, just try as hard as I can in practice, work as hard as I can, study get ready to play just like every game," said Hanie, who completed 3 of 4 passes for 36 yards. "Gotta get ready as if you're playing the whole game or else you come in there unprepared and look not very good out there."

Hanie, for one, believes Cutler will be ready to face the Panthers. The veteran has never missed an NFL start because of injury.

"I talked to him and he's doing fine," Hanie said. "So he's taking it day to day and just play it out.

"If I had to go in and start I'd be fine with it. I'd be ready to go and take the opportunity and feel comfortable about it.

I liked Haine as our backup; and I think he showed why; it wasn't a great performance, but after watching Cutler and Collin's getting destroyed out there he had probably wet himself before going in.
Let Haine, who has more mobility then Collins go out there, and find a guy on speed dial in case another one bites the dust.

I like hanie also, BUT if being honest he was BAD in camp this year and then got hurt- so 100% understandable, WHY got Collins and have no problem with that decision as insurance and a back up to start year. Depending on cutler's situation hope hanie continues to show WHy we should have faith in him- but not a chance would not ahve gotten a vet before the year and just gone with an injured hanie as the sole backup

I think I would feel a little more comfortable with Hanie behind center, rather than Collins, if Cutler can't make the start. In the few snaps he took he showed more pose and was obviously a quicker decision maker than Collins and Cutler against the push rush.

agreed, but back a month ago, he was injured as to WHY collins not hanie the back up and as collins was getting the snaps in practice, made sense for him to the back up until hanie healthy

    Hanie > Collins

And, Collins is nothing more than a one/two year rental, if going to keep Hanie around, should actually develop him.

i didn't even look at collins as a 1 yr rental.. more like a "1 month rental" until hanie was back from his injury, and because never know with an injury how long.. made sense
