"D" leads league in takeaways, 3rd in Run , 5th in points-Growl back

The Growl is coming is coming back to the "D", and in lovie's "D", alot of that is shown by the takeaways, when the "D' is going well, getting the Forced Fumbles and INT's which comes from forcing 2nd and 3rd and longs.

Right now we have 14 turnovers, which leads the league, and up to 6th in yards given up- which is a vast difference from 2007-2009.

Peppers while hasn't put up the Sacks yet, has been worth every penny, as his all around game better than expected nd causing so much havoc( penalties, rushed throws , etc), that are not showing up on his Stat sheet, but make a huge difference.

Urlacher is showing WHY he is a Hall of Famer Candidate and may once again be the Only Linebacker of this generation that has a 100+ tackle, 5 Sack, 5 INt season, showing off his all around Ability to cover the field and make plays. Already has 29 tackles, 1 FF, 2 FR, 1 Sack, 1 Int, 4 PD, and peanut already has 2 INT and 1 FF

here's to watching the "D" just getting better and better as 2010 goes on. You can see the confidence growing

Mullin: Bears 'D' developing personality, swagger

One thing the Bears defensive players of 2005 and 2006 became utterly sick of was the incessant comparisons of them with past great defenses, most frequently the 1985 bunch. Both ’05 and ’06 defenses finished in the top five in yardage allowed while the ’05 defense allowed just 202 points, third-best in franchise history and bettered by only the ’85 and ’86 teams.

But now, standing sixth in the NFL in yardage allowed and fifth in scoring, the 2010 Bears are being compared instead to themselves of just a few years ago. They are on pace to allow fewer points than the 2006 Super Bowl team; they are allowing 20 fewer rushing yards per game than the sixth-ranked 2006 defense; and they have allowed only 6 more points through five games than the 2005 did to this point of the season.

More important, while no one was noticing, they have developed a swagger and a personality.

They had that back in those last two playoff seasons. But that was when Lance Briggs, Tommie Harris, Charles Tillman and Brian Urlacher all were young pups in a sport where four and five years of age makes a difference.

“Absolutely,” said safety Chris Harris, a member of both the 2005 and 2006 defenses. “Guys are still vibrant.

“We’re big kids, really big kids. The energy is still there. Regardless [of the passage of years]. Yeah, it was 4-5 years ago but guys are still playing at a high level and guys are playing with the intensity we had back then.”

Urlacher returning and Julius Peppers arriving are the two biggest elements in the personality formation. Along with Harris, the Bears effectively “added” a major figure in each of the three levels on defense: line, linebackers and secondary.

And while Peppers had 91 million reasons for choosing Chicago, he had similar money potentially elsewhere. But Briggs and Urlacher “are unbelievable,” Peppers said. “That’s one of the reasons I came here, to play with those guys, to play on a team like this.”

Bears opponents have had 64 possessions; the defense has ended 24 of those in three-and-out’s, 37.5 percent, the most in the NFL.

No team has more takeaways than the Bears’ 14 (tied with Detroit). Through five games last year the Bears had eight.

The Bears are the only team to hold two opponents under 170 net yards this season (Carolina, Detroit). Last year without Peppers, Urlacher and Harris, the Bears didn’t do that even once.

In the 16 games of 2005 they accomplished that exactly once, and then not until Game 9. Same in 2006, once.

Comparisons can be dangerous and misleading. But these comparisons are to the Bears themselves. And those are worth noting. The Bears’ defense is not getting older; it is getting better.

The notion of Lovie Smith and the coaching staff holding players more accountable conveniently ignores recent history. But where accountability is happening, and where it arguably matters even more, is inside the defense itself.

“We all hold each other accountable,” Peppers said. “It’s not one person or one coach. We all get on each other. We all know we have a job to do and we have to go out and do it and if we don’t, certain things happen.”

Chicago Knows its defense. Thay why I love this team.

Yep, and despite the complaining and bashing of Marinelli all off season and how he will not be good, think he's proven those skeptics wrong and shown can field a very good "D' and get them playing as a unit. Like he has cut back the blitzing ,but not the pressure- Really like his Subsitution patterns and keeping the rotation fresh, be it at DT or CB..

The biggest Suprise, IMO, has been the revitalized Run "D", which after 3 years of going backward , back with Vengence, and if you can stop the Run, really opens up alot of options and opportunites for Turnovers.. 2nd and 3rd and long, because didn't give up 4-6 yards in first down rushes a large part of this.

Now 1.5 sacks, the NFL changed the one to split between him and Izzy.

Did they? Good!.. Figured they would, but hadn't noticed that- thanks.

They both got there at same time- so at game wondered how only gave to izzy.

Just Like how the year off, really may have been a blessing in disguise with how Well he looks, not just in his sideline to sideline play, but attitude- He was like a Kid Sunday, smiling in the sideline jumping up on big plays, like he used to in 2001-2003...Think the time off, not just Physically, but Mentally really has helped, Just reinvigorated and IMO show not only not done, but has at least 2 years left... Now if we can just get that Ring.. : 0

stopping the run isnt a surprise to me. We got Toe on the dline playing and playing often and Harris is keeping the bench warm. When Toe his rookie year was inserted and he kicked ass against the run. Plus we have bigger DE and we dont need to blitz so our LBs are able to make plays.

Good point on the bigger DE's meaning don't need to blitz so much and better at run stopping on the edge
