Cutler: Bears will cure protection, third-down ills
By Vaughn McClure
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler hasn't given up on his offensive line. And he certainly still believes in offensive coordinator Mike Martz despite the team's offensive woes.
The Bears have been sacked a league-high 27 times and have converted just 13 of 74 third downs through six games.
"Mike's going to take the blame because that's who Mike is," Cutler said. "As players, we have to take more responsibility for this. We've been in the system long enough. Everyone should know what to do, should be able to execute better on the field.
"We have excellent coaches. They're doing everything possible to put us in position to be successful; telling us every little detail we need to know. We just have to go out and do it."
When Cutler was sacked six times in last Sunday's loss to the Seattle, lack of communication had a lot to do with it. Cutler didn't help himself on at least two of those sacks.
"We need to take a hard look at ourselves on offense, myself included," Cutler said. "And we have to execute better.
"Whether it's us as players not paying attention, not doing exactly what we're supposed to do, or if it's something (the coaches) are doing and they're wording it differently, we've got to figure it out. It's got to come from both ends."
Cutler was asked if he needs the ability to audible in Martz's scheme.
"No. Not in this offense," he said. "Didn't really have that in Denver, either. There are answers out there.
"Every play, there are a thousand different scenarios. Receivers are cutting routes. The offensive line is doing different stuff. I'm looking at different things. We've got backs checking. ... It's very complex. Everything's built into it. It's just a matter of us doing it correctly."
The Bears went 0-for-12 on third down against Seattle. The third-down woes have to be addressed this week versus the Redskins.
"We're going to have to hit some hot (receivers), I'm going to have to be a little more accurate, and we have to protect better,'' Cutler said. "It's on everyone. It takes 11 guys."
Despite the problems, Cutler sees no reason to panic.
"We're 4-2," he said. "We're still in a good spot. As player as and a staff, we've kind of identified the problem. We're going to attack it and we're going to fix it."
