Cutler: Bears will cure protection, third-down ills

Cutler: Bears will cure protection, third-down ills

    By Vaughn McClure

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler hasn't given up on his offensive line. And he certainly still believes in offensive coordinator Mike Martz despite the team's offensive woes.

The Bears have been sacked a league-high 27 times and have converted just 13 of 74 third downs through six games.

"Mike's going to take the blame because that's who Mike is," Cutler said. "As players, we have to take more responsibility for this. We've been in the system long enough. Everyone should know what to do, should be able to execute better on the field.

"We have excellent coaches. They're doing everything possible to put us in position to be successful; telling us every little detail we need to know. We just have to go out and do it."
When Cutler was sacked six times in last Sunday's loss to the Seattle, lack of communication had a lot to do with it. Cutler didn't help himself on at least two of those sacks.

"We need to take a hard look at ourselves on offense, myself included," Cutler said. "And we have to execute better.

"Whether it's us as players not paying attention, not doing exactly what we're supposed to do, or if it's something (the coaches) are doing and they're wording it differently, we've got to figure it out. It's got to come from both ends."

Cutler was asked if he needs the ability to audible in Martz's scheme.

"No. Not in this offense," he said. "Didn't really have that in Denver, either. There are answers out there.

"Every play, there are a thousand different scenarios. Receivers are cutting routes. The offensive line is doing different stuff. I'm looking at different things. We've got backs checking. ... It's very complex. Everything's built into it. It's just a matter of us doing it correctly."

The Bears went 0-for-12 on third down against Seattle. The third-down woes have to be addressed this week versus the Redskins.

"We're going to have to hit some hot (receivers), I'm going to have to be a little more accurate, and we have to protect better,'' Cutler said. "It's on everyone. It takes 11 guys."

Despite the problems, Cutler sees no reason to panic.

"We're 4-2," he said. "We're still in a good spot. As player as and a staff, we've kind of identified the problem. We're going to attack it and we're going to fix it."

I am impressed with the beating that he is taking that he is still walking the company line.

Don't worry a little more of this and Jay is going to be calling for Jerry's head, that is if his powers of speech still work.

Shanahan: No concussion concerns with Cutler

    October 20, 2010 12:05 PM | 1 Comment

    By Dan Pompei

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan knows Jay Cutler as any coach in the NFL, and in a conference call with Chicago media Wednesday, he had nothing but good things to say about the quarterback he drafted in Denver.

"I think the world of Jay Cutler," Shanahan said. "He did a great job for me in Denver. I like who he is and what he stands for."

Shanahan talked about why he used the 11th pick of the 2006 draft on Cutler.

"He was the SEC player of the year coming from Vanderbilt, where they didn't have the supporting cast that a lot of teams had," he said. "He'd stand in the pocket and make all the throws. Obviously, he had a very strong arm, and could concentrate down the field and make all the throws that pro quarterbacks know they have to make."

He said concussions were "not at all a concern" with Cutler.

"He's such a tough guy you don't even know when he's got a concussion unless it's extreme," he said. "It's never been a concern of mine."

Cutler has been sacked a lot in Chicago, but Shanahan pointed out Cutler got rid of the ball very well when he was with the Broncos, as evidenced by being sacked only 11 times in 627 attempts in 2008.

Asked why Cutler has struggled with sacks since, Shanahan said. "I can guarantee you one thing -- Jay is an excellent quarterback."

The Bears-Redskins game Sunday represents a homecoming for Shanahan, who grew up in Franklin Park and went to East Leyden High School. He said he still has many relatives and friends in the area, and he always enjoys coming home.

"I was always a big Chicago Bears fan," he said. "I'll always continue to be, except for this weekend."

Like that he is taking responsibilty and ALL working on it and no pointing fingers that is what good teams do..

I think a big part of it is just thats its the first year in this offense. I just hope it somehow gets fixed so the Bears win the NFC North, because this is 3 straight games where I was amazed Cutler didn't leave on a stretcher.

Good teams dont have crappy OL to begin with, so there is no need to "finger point."

So you don't think the eagles, saints, packers, vikes and giants are 'good teams" right? I mean they all have oline struggles and crappy o line play now... just want to make sure you are consistant

Here's the thing db...i know what you are trying to do young Skywalker, but I am a Toydarian, mind tricks dont work on me, only money.

But yeah, theres a huge difference between "struggling" and FLAT OUT WORST OL IN THE LEAGUE. Even if we had an AVERAGE OL, it would be a huge improvement.
