Tice exhorts lineman to know jobs and do them

Tice exhorts lineman to know jobs and do them

Shrinking playbook is no answer to offensive line's woes

Professor Mike Tice handed out a couple of homework assignments for Wednesday evening.

The Bears offensive line coach buried his copy of last Sunday's debacle versus the Seahawks, but Tice instructed rookie right tackle J'Marcus Webb and second-year right guard Edwin Williams to dissect the film a little longer before Thursday's practice.

"There's a reason why sometimes young linemen look like they don't know what they're doing,'' Tice said, "because usually, they don't.''

Tice had encouraged his young linemen to live by the slogan: Believe you know because you do. But Webb and Williams didn't exactly play like believers last week.

On the field they don't speak because they're not positive they know what they know what they think they know they know,'' Tice rambled. "Doesn't that sound good?

"Unfortunately, if they would just believe in themselves, they'd be right? Actually nine out of 10 times they'd be right.''

Getting things right is the task for Tice in preparation for Sunday's showdown with rush-specialist Brian Orakpo and the Redskins. Although Tice encouraged Webb to do more cramming than anyone else, he explained there was enough blame to go down the entire line.

"It was growing pains, and we haven't had an all-around great game up front yet,'' Tice said. "We need to continue to find the things the kids do well — of course Olin (Kreutz) is not a kid anymore — but find things the guys do well and continue to work on those and call those and continue to grow.''

Communications problems have stunted the line's growth. While one lineman claimed the Seahawks game called for six different protection schemes, Tice said he used more than 20 of the 37 protections at his disposal.

Such profusion that leads to confusion would explain why Jay Cutler was sacked six times and why the Seahawks had so many free runs at Cutler. The Bears have surrendered a league-high 27 sacks.

"Confusing? No, not at all,'' Kreutz said of the numerous protection schemes. "You have to know in the NFL that this is your job. And if you're confused, then put in more freaking work, period. If you can't handle it, you can't play in the NFL.

"We have to get ready for every Sunday what is in our play book. The onus is on the players to get that done. With the coaches, I know what they're thinking: that they're going to help us by scaling back. We have to think as players, we have to help them by learning our (stuff).''

Tice said he was encouraged by the second-half improvement against the Seahawks, but four of Cutler's six sacks came in the second half.

No matter what type of protections Tice plans to use moving forward, Kreutz said the line has to be better prepared.

"Right now would be the worst time to start hiding behind, `Well, this is too much,' and `This guy is not doing his job and this guy is not doing his job.' Just do your freaking job and get better at it, and we'll be all right.''

Mike Tice is a freaking genius with this quote:

“There’s a reason sometimes, young linemen look like they don’t know what they’re doing because, usually, they don’t.”

Fear not, Bears fans. Your offensive line woes are getting fixed by this guy!

Line needs to major in communications

    by sean jensen

Continuity is a key to consistent offensive line play, which might explain -- at least in part -- the abundance of issues for the Bears.

Six games into the season, the Bears are already on their fourth combination on the offensive line, although coach Lovie Smith and offensive line coach Mike Tice have said that last Sunday's five are in line to start again Sunday against the Washington Redskins

The Bears are concerned about the play of the offensive line -- particularly the pass protection that has quarterback Jay Cutler on pace to be sacked 69 times -- but they also recognize the inevitable growing pains of two unheralded and inexperienced players starting side-by-side. Edwin Williams, undrafted in 2009, had two starts under his belt before joining the Bears practice squad just before the season. The former college center is the team's starting right guard. J'Marcus Webb, a 2010 seventh-round pick out West Texas A&M, is preparing for his third consecutive start at right tackle.

The Bears have been encouraged by the play of the two young players, but they have endured a couple of natural byproducts: uncertainty and an inability to communicate.

While veteran center Olin Kreutz lines up his linemates, each player is responsible for verbalizing what they see. That, Tice said, didn't happen enough against the Seattle Seahawks, who peppered the Bears with blitzes.

''We have some young guys out there that didn't communicate some things,'' Tice said. ''One guy sees it and doesn't pass it along. It kind of hurts the mesh of things.''

Part of it is confidence, Tice said.

''On the field, they don't speak because they're not positive they know what they know,'' Tice said. ''Unfortunately, if they would just believe themselves, they'd be right, nine out of 10 times.''

But Tice insisted Williams and Webb weren't solely to blame.

''The sacks and some of the flaws in the protection aren't just on those guys,'' Tice said. ''We did a great job of spreading it around.''

Running back Chester Taylor said running backs have to pick up blitzing defensive backs, or help with linemen or linebackers.
''It's all about execution,'' Taylor said.

Tice was upbeat Wednesday, downplaying concern that his line is overwhelmed with protections and any issue he might have with offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Asked about his relationship with Martz, Tice said, ''Fantastic. We're trying to work through who we are. We're trying to work through together, what we can ask the guys to do, not just in the O-line but across the board.''

Before the game against Carolina, Tice said linemen are ''big when they're going forward,'' noting an advantage of running more. The Bears ran a season-high 42 times for 218 yards. But against the Seahawks, Taylor and Matt Forte attempted 12 runs.
Martz admitted Wednesday that the Bears should have run the ball more against the Seahawks.

''Particularly in the second half,'' Martz said. ''I need to change there.''

Given his team's problems, Taylor wasn't surprised the Seahawks kept blitzing.

''If something's working, why not stick to it?'' Taylor said. ''So they kept sticking to it and bringing different people from different places.

''We just have to adjust a lot better.''

Maybe some of us are tired of the talking, and want to see something actually change on the field. When that happens, then i doubt any of us will care WHAT they say, one way or the other.

and edwin williams came off a teams practice squad with a bad oline. Why would he have been on the practice squad with that teams woes on the oline? That is the crap we are starting on a weekly basis. thanks ja!

It's pretty simple. Either adapt the playcalling to fit the abilities of the line or suffer. This group isn't going to miraculously turn into studs during the season.
