What's with Olsen's vanishing act?
What's with Olsen's vanishing act?
Bears tight end hasn't had reception in 2 games as role has faded
Not only did Greg Olsen see his playing time diminish in last Sunday's loss to the Seahawks, the pass-catching tight end also was on the field for only 4 of 12 third-down plays.
And the Bears passed on all 12.
Olsen was on the field for 38 of the 59 offensive plays (64.4 percent), but didn't make a catch for the second consecutive game. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz's schemes have been known to rule out the tight end, but many believed Olsen would an exception to the rule.
"With some of the protection stuff we were doing, we were counting on Brandon (Manumaleuna) going in to be the extra blocker to try to help us push the ball down the field a little bit," Olsen said. "That's just sometimes how it happens."
Olsen stands fourth on the team in receptions with 15 for 179 yards and two touchdowns. He led the Bears with 60 last season.
"We're doing everything possible to get Greg involved,'' quarterback Jay Cutler said. "Some games he's going to be more involved than others."
Picture this: The NFL fined James Harrison $75,000 for his illegal hit on Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi yet the league sold pictures of the hit on its Web site earlier this week.
That didn't sit well with Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, who earlier this week spoke out against the league's new stance on flagrant hits.
"I don't understand it: They're going to fine the guy, then make money off his picture,'' Urlacher said. "That's cool. It's cool if he gets residuals. I think he should get some of that money back.''

MAYBE b/c Martz is not a big fan of using the TE for anything other then blocking? I believe we have been over this many many times; historically Martz TE's(good or no) do not havet he ball thrown to them. Olen up until the last few games was being used more then most.

its interesting that Olsen WAS used the first 3 weeks, and the "O" looked better, hasn't been used and "O" bogs down. You may be rigt martz 'reverted" to his old ways, but hopefully realizes the fault of that

I don't disagree w/that DB, and I hope he does. This team is not set up for his style of O; he needs to modify it. The OL cannot hold for a 5-7 step drops and deep balls more then a select few times, and it's best wr option is Olsen(and imo DA b/c of their size and hands but lets stay on point w/Martz and Olsen). He also needs to get more runs, and less funs n guns to get more wins. This is also why you don't save all your regular O for the regular season, and you try and run some things in pre season to see if it will work. I also agree that Martz has learned, and continues to be reminded that his full playbook is not open to this group of players.

yep the 'hot reads" to olsen will back off the LB/S quickly.. and its a muhc better play than him blocking : )
And the runs come when converting 3rd down and having long drives, not when going 0 or 1 for the game on third down..Its really hard to get any continuity or better ratio's when in alot of 2nd and 3rd in longs, or not converting 3rd downs- just reality. hopefully see an improvement on both fronts this week

screw fantasy football it sucks cause we have looked mediocre on O. He is one of our best weapons but Martz just doesnt like to use TEs. Now we are seeing what we said all offseason of how he marginalized Vernon Davis in San Fran.

But he didn't the first 3 weeks, he had 11 catches and 2 td's.. So he can use him- the question is why not? hoping just a one game anomaly.. I don't count the panther game or giants, because it was Collins who could find anyone. So really just one game- guess we shall sunday
