    Numbers show improvement in defense

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Numbers tell the story of the 2010 Chicago Bears defense through seven games.

"The numbers are good," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "You know, it’s always good to be up there in total yardage. But you know we don’t look at that a lot. We look at scoring defense. We’re right at the top … third downs, taking the ball away. You know the guys have just really played hard and played well throughout. I’m pretty pleased with where we are headed into this next phase."

Blessed with relative good health up to this point, the Bears are performing better in almost every major statistical defensive category than last season's unit after seven games.

Under the guidance of first-year defensive coordinator Rod Marinell, the Bears have surrendered fewer touchdowns, yards per game and rushing yards, while increasing the number of interceptions and fumble recoveries, and lowering the percentage of opponents' third-down conversions.

Oddly enough, the Bears actually have fewer sacks and have given up more passing yards, despite the offseason addition of prized defensive end Julius Peppers.

"We're coming out and playing at a very high level," Marinelli said. "The consistency is what I'm pleased with. Down in and down out, [we're just] playing the snap and playing together as a team. We just have to maintain that.

"Our system is all based on teamwork. Sometimes you have to give up an opportunity to make a play, and allow a teammate to make a play. That's the discipline we are looking for."

    GETTING DEFENSIVE

A look at how the Bears' defense compares with last season's group through seven games:
    Statistic 2009 2010
    TDs allowed 18 11
    Yards/game 310 305.3
    Rush yds/game 110.6 89.3
    Pass yds/game 199.4 216
    Interceptions 7 9
    Sacks 15 11
    Fumbles recovered 5 8
    3rd-down conv. pct 40 29.6

Wow... Really? This thread is about the Bears' defensive play that you are pleased with and are using to find a silver lining in the Bears' current circumstances and you bring up steroids and the Vikings?

Please explain to me how the silver lining of the Bears' defense and steroids and the Vikings go hand in hand because I GOTTA READ THIS!

I totally get seeking a silver lining when your favorite team is not playing well but those defensive numbers, while impressive, should be taken with a grain of salt. Yeah, the defense is playing solid football but there are two other phases to the game that have prevented the Bears from enjoying a better record.
Do you make a habit of reading other people's mail too? I'm pretty sure my first post in this thread was directed at Jimmors and you had to jump in with your nonsense.

And I didn't even feel like I was bashing the Bears or you with that post. Like I said in that post, I completely understand searching for a silver lining when the Bears are in a tailspin. Trust me, I know. As a Viking fan, I am looking high and low for a silver lining!!

Oh yeah and since this seems to make you feel better when I say it... 4-3 is better than 2-4. Happy?

Yes, there are deep seated issues. The behavior you exhibited when you bring up posts of mine from long ago is classic passive aggressive behavior.

You compound that by using my words in your posts and sounding like a total child.

Again, I will discuss or debate whatever, whenever. Create the thread. PM me. Ask me nicely. I will read it & post honestly.

Lastly, do you even know what a strawman is? That is why I left the link. Just a courtesy from me to you so you understand what I am talking about in case you had never heard the term before. And how are you accusing me a of, not only one strawman, but "a pattern" of strawmen? I am not the one that is routinely bashed around here for putting words in other people's mouths am I? Heck, you are putting words in my mouth with that last post!!

    Entertain me.

PJ, don't waste reason and logic, if he can't get along with bears fans there is little chance he can get along with a viking fan. You are a great member of the board.
