I know you weren't saying all the players look at it as a job. I was speaking in general.
I agree the team does look out of control and that has to land at the feet of one Mr. Lovie Smith.
I won't forget though how this team played in Wanny's last years (truly pathetic) and Jauron. Lovies teams play with way more heart (in general) than the teams under Wanny and Jauron. IMO, Lovie is a way better HC than those two, but he's still middle of the road at best. I like his defensive philosophy of take aways and scoring off those take aways. That aggressive mindset harkens back to the Buddy Ryan era. Not the same scheme, but same aggressive mindset with regard to turnovers. The defense became instantly more aggressive and tougher under Lovie. People may not agree with the Tampa 2 and that scheme, but I think players make the scheme. In the past few seasons, we have had injuries at the 3 key positions of that defense: DT, MLB and FS. That has severely hurt it's ability to function.
My main concern is his offenses. IMO, as a HC, you surround yourself with the best possible people, then hold them accountable. IMO, he has not done enough work finding that OC who matches up with his philosophy, then working with the GM to make sure he has the tools necessary to get the job done. Run offense, pass offense or a balanced offense, I really don't care what we run. Again, if we don't have the players, the system won't work. With Martz, I felt we would experience growing pains as the WR's and Jay got comfortable. We saw some of that yesterday with WR's not finishing their routes. I can live with that for now. What bothers me are the mental mistakes: fumbles and picks. People talk about the Detroit game and how we got lucky in the end. IMO, that game should have been over long before the 4th quarter and that last play should have been a non issue. Both Forte and Olsen fumbled in the red zone, killing drives. And of course the disastrous first and goal from the 1 series. Forte's fumble again yesterday couldn't have come at a worse time. 4th quarter, we're moving the ball and are inside the Redskins 35 yard line! Ready for a go ahead TD or at least a FG. That fumble is a killer. Then on the last drive of the day for the Bears, we get a couple quick first downs and then Jay throws a BAD pass that gets picked. I can't blame Knox too much for not competing on the play because the ball was so far over his head. I do understand about our receivers competing for balls. To me, only Bennett consistently runs his routes and competes for the ball.
This rant and the previous one weren't not 100% rebuttal to your original post. I kind of got off track as I thought about the game yesterday and started to get upset all over again...lmao.
The funny thing about the season so far, is that we aren't out of it yet. As bad as we've played at times, we still can win our division. In the 2nd half of the season, we have some of our toughest games, so it won't be easy, but at least we have a chance.

Unfortunately, that's how I think anyone that is professional, or has been Professional, perceives us.

For one...yes this IS just entertainment, and it IS just a job to them. Its football, its a game. Their job is to catch or throw a damn ball and hit other people. Its US the FANS that have blown it out of proportion and dumped billions of dollars into merchandise and tickets to make it seem more important then what it actually is: a game.
And yes...the common denominator in the past couple decades has been Virginia McCaskey and family. But that wont change for the moment, so no need to discuss it until it does change.
And of course fans are more passionate about their team then the athletes are on it. Thats like if you were to move to a new city for a job and be expected to be more passionate about that city then the a person who has lived there all their life.
People expect something for their "billions" of dollars of investments. Just saying...!!!

I now live in Atlanta. When I talk football with my buddies down here, I kinda do the same thing. Shrug the shoulders and tell them "we're only as good as our offensive line".

As fans, the only way we can "speak" is with our pocket book.
2 examples as they pertain to my situation:
1) The NBA: I used to be a big basketball fan. IMO, the game has gone down hill. It's hard for me to watch the NCAA tourney anymore either. I won't go into the details, but I completely stopped watching the NBA. I don't give a rip anymore. I haven't spent a penny on that sport in many years.
2) Chicago Blackhawks: I grew up loving the Hawks. I remember listening to the '71 Stanley Cup between Montreal and Chicago. I was only 8, but I still remember losing that cup. It's my favorite sport by far and the Hawks are my favorite team by far. Yet, at the tail end of Bill Wirtz's tenure as owner, I stopped spending any money on that team. No jerseys, tickets or any item that would translate into money going into "Worthless Dollar" Bill's pocket. Now that Rocky's taken over and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he cares about the team and fans, I'll spend money hand over fist on them.
Great point about ROI 3nagurski!
