Practice squad moves - add chris johnson and richmond mcgee

    No.. not THAT chris johnson,,

skjensen #Bears also added LB Chris Johnson and released WR Greg Mathews and LB Marcus Buggs.

skjensen #Bears add punter Richmond McGee to the practice squad, likely for developmental purposes given the less than stellar play of Brad Maynard

disagree strongly maynard is 'crap" he lead the league in 2008 and 2009 in downed punts inside the 20.. that is far from 'crap".. has he been inconsitant at times? yep.. but he is not 'crap".. don't think has EVER had a punt run back for a TD yet on bears again not 'crap".. Directional and high kicks that may have a yard or 2 less, BUT have no return's more valuab;e than a booming kick returned in your face when outkick the coverage..

FWIW do think maynard near the end so good to look or a replacement, just disagree "crap'.. and he's 9th in 2010 in punting for again not being crap( unless 21+ other punters more crap..lol) and 3rd on downed inside the 20 punts with 15 in 2010

Maynard's doing well. He will be the best punter once his leg falls off from kicking so much and they replace it with a robotic limb.

Bears sign punter McGee to back up Maynard

    October 26, 2010 10:44 AM | 6 Comments

    By Brad Biggs

After a shaky game for Brad Maynard that raised questions about whether he is fully healthy, the Bears have signed punter Richmond McGee to the practice squad.

Maynard had seven punts in Sunday's 17-14 loss to the Washington Redskins and his gross average was only 36.3 yards. Asked after the game if he was healthy, Maynard wasn't thrilled with the line of questioning.

Interestingly, the Friday before the Seattle game when Maynard finished punting in practice, he immediately huddled with a trainer and strength and conditioning coach Rusty Jones and went inside Halas Hall while the rest of practice resumed. He had a strong day then, and kicked well against the Seahawks.

The punting didn't go so well against the Redskins, and if Maynard needs to rest during the off week, McGee can handle punting chores. McGee was with the Bears during part of training camp, and also spent 2009 in camp with the team. This also will allow special-teams coordinator Dave Toub to monitor McGee's progress since the summer.

Maynard has averaged 38.4 yards per punt for the season and has a net of 34.2 with 15 punts inside the 20-yard line and only three touchdbacks.

Also added to the practice squad was linebacker Chris Johnson, an undrafted rookie free agent from South Dakota State. He spent preseason with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Bears first got acquainted with Johnson in rookie minicamp when he had an interception and performed well. He suffered a high-ankle sprain in the preseason finale for the Cardinals, and was released off their injured reserve last week.

Linebacker Marcus Buggs and wide receiver Greg Mathews were waived from the practice squad

My take on Brad is that when we really need a great punt to get us out of bad field position, he doesn't make it 75% of the time. He's is a great directional punter and good at pinning teams in there own end. I wouldn't want to make a change, just to "make a change" but it is time to start looking for his replacement.

and think that is the idea of bringing back mcgee now..just in no way do I think 'crap'.. want to say at age 36, he's towards the end and not booming Punts anymore? no argument, but STILL one of the best directional punters in league and esp Still downing inside the 20's.. so not 'crap".. and sometimes you take for granted how good on no run backs he is- I still have scar memories of sauerbraun booming it 50+ yards and having it returned 60 on a consistant basis, or when game on line shanking it 15 yards... Sometimes change isn't better : )

I made my post before reading your response to Motown. Seems we're in agreement about the strengths and weaknesses of Maynard.
