Bears Hall of Fame running back will be remembered in 2 segments Monday

Jarrett Payton is planning a "Remembering Sweetness" radio programs from 9 a.m. to noon and 7-10 p.m. Monday, the 11th anniversary of the death of Bears Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton.

Among those scheduled to call in to http://www.chicagolandsportsradio.com to share stories are Jim Brown, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Jim McMahon and Ahmad Green.

"It is going to be really special," Payton said.

Word on the street: Bears defensive tackler Anthony Adams was named the team's recipient of the 2010 Ed Block Courage Award, presented to one player on all 32 NFL teams who best exemplifies a commitment to sportsmanship and courage and serves as an inspiration in the locker room.

Sights seen: The Blackhawks had a team Halloween party and forward Viktor Stalberg said the best costume was that of defenseman Jon Scott, who dressed up as Frankenstein. "He had these big heels on and at 6 feet 8 he looked like he was 7-4," he told WGN-AM 720. The worst costume, according to Stalberg, was Patrick Sharp's. "I think he just wore whatever his wife told him to wear," Stalberg chuckled.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Redskins' Albert Haynesworth has been fined $7,500 by the NFL for his blindside block Sunday on Bears offensive lineman J'Marcus Webb.

The unnecessary roughness infraction game away from the play during DeAngelo Hall's 92-yard interception return.

Adams wins courage award

Anthony Adams was voted the winner of the Ed Block Courage Award by his teammates. The award is presented to the one player on every team who best exemplifies sportsmanship, courage and serves as an inspiration to others.
Block was a longtime trainer of the Baltimore Colts whose foundation promotes the prevention of child abuse.
''It's great to win such a prestigious award and get voted by my teammates,'' Adams said. ''That makes a difference to get voted from a lot of the Bears' guys. It's great, man.''

No trip for Briggs

Thanks to the bye week, players were packing their bags after practice Thursday while preparing for a weekend away from Halas Hall. Briggs, however, said he would be back at team headquarters at 8 a.m. today to get treatment for a high ankle sprain that sidelined him against the Seahawks and for most of the game Sunday against the Redskins.

''He's feeling pretty confident,'' coach Lovie Smith said when asked about Briggs' availability for the game next Sunday against the Bills in Toronto. ''We are, too. We think we'll have all of our team ready to practice Monday or at least play on the weekend.''

Time to turn it up

Defensive players have been working on fundamentals this week while taking solace in the fact that all three of their losses have been in close games.

''We've had opportunities to win all those games,'' Idonije said. ''They've been really close and games that we should have won, and unfortunately we just didn't do enough. We hold on to that and knowing that we're going to be rested up in this third part of the season into the fourth [part], this is where playoff teams, championship teams, turn it up. We want to be in that mix, so we're ready to go to that next level and get better. We've done some good things, but we're looking to get better.''

Little kicking back might be good for Bears

The Chicago Bears crawled through the past month, losing three of their past four games, including two straight in Soldier Field.

Perfect time for a bye week.

Will it pay off? It can’t hurt.

“You’ve got to get away from the game a little bit mentally. I think it’s going to be good for the guys,” Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said Wednesday.

He happens to be the one who needs it the most. Cutler has thrown five interceptions and two touchdowns in his past four games.

Making bad look good
The Bears have found ways to make bad defenses look good of late. Buffalo fans are hoping they will do it again Nov. 7 in Toronto.

Washington was rated next-to-last in total defense when it held on for a 17-14 win Sunday in Chicago, and still dropped to dead last.

Seattle is 11th in total defense, but the Seahawks hadn’t cracked the top 15 before beating the Bears 24-23 two weeks ago.

Now the Bears face the 21st-ranked defense in Buffalo, with the 31st-ranked rushing defense, when they return from their bye week.

“Obviously we’ve got some things we need to clean up,” Jay Cutler said. “We’re aware of that, and we’re going to address them this week.”

Bears defense not happy either
The Bears defense is still in the top half of the league numbers-wise, even though some of the players on that side of the ball are unhappy with their play.

Chicago did hold Washington to 308 yards, 2-for-13 on third downs and just 17 points — seven of which came on an interception, and three more directly off a turnover. Still, they aren’t satisfied, especially since they’ve lost the past two games at home to weak NFC teams.

“Their offense put 10 points up on us” defensive lineman Anthony Adams said Monday. “We got to a point where I think it was 14-10 and if they don’t score we win. We put it on us to try to keep them out of the end zone, and they ended up scoring.

“We put that on us.”

D.J. tried to hide the smile
D.J. Moore is going to end up being a household name if he keeps this up.

With that name, that classic hairstyle and a golden smile, he’ll fit the part off the field as well as he has lately on the field.

“No, I can’t have much fun with it right now,” Moore said after Sunday’s three-point loss to Washington, “because we’re losing.”

Moore had a 54-yard interception return for the first touchdown of his career and then had another that was called back because of a Redskins delay-of-game penalty.

He has 16 tackles as well, and is working his way into the mix with a nice blend of speed and aggressiveness.

Vermeil remains supportive of Martz

Former St. Louis Rams coach Dick Vermeil, who teamed with offensive coordinator Mike Martz to win Super Bowl XXXIV, said the Chicago Bears' problems transcend the coaching staff.

"Anytime you throw the ball a high percentage of the time, you have to have good offensive linemen," Vermeil said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I watched some of the game this past weekend, and [Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth came over an offensive guard and put him in the quarterback's lap as quick as fast as he got back there.

"That's hard for a quarterback to solve that problem by himself. And sometimes it's tough for the offensive line coach to solve that problem, because he only has one offensive guard who can play."

And it's not just the guards.

"I think the problems go beyond Mike Martz," Vermeil said. "I think the problems lie in the offensive line. I think Mike and Mike Tice will gradually adjust, or will adjust quickly especially during this bye week, to doing what both the offensive line can do and what the quarterback can do.

"I just have great confidence in Mike and in Mike Tice that they will figure out the problem. I don't know if anyone is to blame."

Vermeil remains a big fan of Martz.

"I worked with him for one year, and he did an unbelievably good job," Vermeil said. "He went to the playoffs the next year as a head coach and went back to the Super Bowl during his third year with the Rams, so he obviously knows what he's doing."

And since Webb is 15 yards out of the play and coming to a stop and not following the play, he is a defenseless player and not pursuing the ball carrier, so its a penalty( and as seen a fine), should have negated the TD and ball 15 yards from infraction

The Vikings are bad with Favre, but they'll be worse without him. I'm hoping maybe the Bears do to the Vikings in this decade what they did to us in the 1970s. Let's beat them 8 times in a row like they did us.

works for me. I just hope chilly finally shows some cahones and does bench him to start, just to see the favre 'pout" on the sidelines would be worth the price of admission : )

not sure who is better at this point for them.. but agree 100% love to see a nice looong streak of beating them( AND GET US ABOVE .500 AGAINST THEM) , its really been an odd decade in the rivarly.. we swept them in 2001 and they swept us in 2007
rest of the decade splits.. neither team can put any winning streak together
