Bears Left Tackle Jim Covert
To have a Left Tackle that you never have to worry about happens once in the league every 10 years.
Jimbo Covert
It's a sad omission he has been left off the Hall of Fame consideration. AP voted him and Munoz as OT of the 80's.
Covert never allowed more than one sack per season. He destroyed the best rushers in the NFL. He beat Lawrence Taylor so badly in the 85 playoff game that Lawrence Taylor took a knee and virtually never crossed the line of scrimmage the rest of the game. Ditka said he was the best lineman he ever saw.
People that never saw him play don't understand that
he was technically perfect with a nasty streak. He just didn't stop rushers, he punished them. In some games teams just stopped rushing his position, the DE would just stop. He humbled the best DE of his era like Lawrence Taylor, Dexter Manley and even the great LeRoy Selmon wanted no part of Jimbo.
If he had played on one of the east coast media teams he would be in the HOF.

That and they are not voting in anymore 85 Bears in...same reason Dent is struggling to get in.

hilgenberg more than covert desrves the Hall of fame of those 80's teams and blockers for Payton:
hilgenberg- 7-time Pro Bowler & 2-time First-Team All-Pro
covert- 2-time Pro Bowler & 2-time First-Team All-Pro

I guess we disagree. I think being voted to an All-Decade Team is as much an honor as number of Pro Bowls and First-Team All-Pros.
In essence you're saying Hilgenberg is more deserving because of 5 more Pro Bowls because him and Covert have the same number of First-Team All-Pros. Again being named as one of the OTs on the 1980s All-Decade Team is as impressive to me as Hilgenberg's 5 additional Pro Bowls. Plus, left tackle is the most important position on the o-line. Seeing him neutralize Lawrence Taylor, a player who makes the top 10 lists of 100 Greatest Football Players, should weigh into the discussion also.

Covert's blocking nullified a Lawrence Taylor in his prime, a feat very few could do. That alone puts him in consideration in my book. Hilgy should be there too. Too bad there are '85 haters.
