why do the numbers have to be retired? I mean I get it, but why not just put the name and number up in a ring of fame, and call it good? I think only the sentimental fave's need to be retired, Payton, Piccolo, and maybe Butkus. But, to retire the number of a player is a bit over played I think.

unretire some players, at that. Just because they were an amazing RB in the 40s doesn't hold water today. Bill George, I kinda get it, he's the guy that created the MLB spot, but no one would take him over singletary (who's number isn't retired).
