Payton Robbed in NFL Network’s Top 100 Ranking

NFL.com and the NFL Network announced their Top 100 Greatest Players Of All Time Many Chicago Bears were on the list of the Top 100 players and two were named in the Top 1o. Dick Butkus checked in at #10 but the biggest miss on the list is their ranking of Walter Payton. Sweetness was selected as the #5 of the all time greats. #5?!?!! Seriously?
Here’s the NFL Network’s tease of the conclusion of the Top 100 seriesfeaturing Payton. As crazy as Jerry Glanville is, you’ve got to love his view of Sweetness.

It’s not so much that Walter finished as #5, but it’s who finished ahead of him.
Take a look at the top of the list:
5. Walter Payton
4. Joe Montana
3. Lawrence Taylor
2. Jim Brown
1. Jerry Rice
First of all, as good as he was, that coke-head, rapist Lawrence Taylor should be disqualified from this list. Next, Payton topped Jim Brown’s rushing record, so Payton should finish ahead of Brown. That leaves the two 49ers – Montana and Rice. Neither one of these guys makes the list without the other. Montana made a career out of a lucky wounded duck caught by Dwight Clark but because it was over “America’s Team” the Dallas Cowboys, it becomes legendary.
So you see, there is a case for Walter Payton to be ranked the #1 Greatest Player. That and a career of hard nosed running, killer blocking, outstanding pass-catching and an overall performance that none of these other players ranked ahead of him could conceive. Walter Payton was robbed!

Using this logic though, Emmit Smith should be ahead of Payton.

I'd say that Brown faced much inferior opponents than Payton. Honestly, how many players from that time period could play today? Just like O.J., I don't think you should take LT's on game field with his off field life. Unless it turns out he also was a roid freak...And find one QB other than Montana that's played so well in the SB.

The top 5 is pretty accurate. The only thing I would change is to move Montana down some. He's the best QBs I've ever seen but I would rank him lower simply because he played with some of the best offensive talent ever put together. Payton played with some of the worst ever put together until Ditka arrived, then draft picks changed everything in a hurry. It's just too hard to pick a top 10, but other then JM I agree with it.

I was talking to my best friend last night at the local high school playoff game between my alma mater (who is ranked #2 in the state) and their bottom-feeder opponent. We got to talking about pro football (we talk all levels, especially Ohio State football), and I mentioned the NFL Top 100 list. I told him that Walter Payton ranked 5th on the list, and even though he has traditionally rooted for the Browns since his family is from Ohio, he said that Payton was "the greatest player, pound for pound, of all time." When a guy who is only now being introduced to Bears football says that about a player, especially considering that his old NFL team that he followed had a Jim Brown that played for them, that is high praise.
