The problem with this 4th, not many teams want their coaches coaching on their final years. Lovie will more than likely get an extention at years end barring a major collapse where they only win one more game.

Not many coaches know both offense and defense.

So you are saying coaching 3 crappy years and have one good year earns him a contract extension? Then again out OL and Tommie Harris showed up in the final 3 games of the year to convince Angelo that he doesn't need to draft OL until the 7th round and let Tommie sand bag his way on the field.

I am not saying that at all, just stating the basic truths in the NFL. Not many coaches reach their walk years. They are either fired before it, or extended before it.

^that. I don't see the extension coming this off season though..perhaps you're right, I don't know. I think you and 4th are both right. This season's been TawesomeD so far, but lets see what happens next year to be sure.

That is what complicated the potential firing all along. Firing him and hiring him someone new this off season and risk paying two coaches not to coach in 2011 would likely not fly for the Bears.
Same problem faces the Broncos. McDonalds wont be fired because they dont want to pay two coaches not to coach, and a third man to coach if there is football next year.

If it was not for the current coaching staff, I truly believe Lovie would still be forcing his hand...

well everyone think Marinelli and Martz are Lovie puppets so what is it Babich just a bad puppet lol. And to be fair all the internet rumors say Lovie is the one who reigned in Martz to get some balance on this team. That to me is good job by the head coach.
I just hope this isnt a Marvin Lewis occurance here and everything goes to crap next year. But from what I see so far that have proven allot of us wrong. Well if they lose out all the rest of the games I will still be right at 8-8 lol but with this defense we have another three wins this season and playoffs!

Come on Benj, he's a Head Coach for cryin' out loud and he's been one for 5+ years now. He'd better have a handle on the offensive capabilities of his team and if not then he should never have risen above the level of a Defensive Co-ordinator! It's also my opinion that he's not the greatest DC in the world either since both "Chico" and Marinelli seem to have had more success with it than he or his pet stooge Babbitt had.

Let's make one thing perfectly clear: Lovie Smith is no Tom Landry or Paul Brown. He does not possess the intellect in X's and O's to simply go out and out-think an opponent. He realizes that to get by, after making mistakes during his tenure, he must rely on brighter minds than his own to best run a football team. Mike Martz is an offensive genius after all the bad things we have said about him (and yes, I'm contradicting myself there as well), and Rod Marinelli is the best DC we've had since Ron Rivera. Lovie is a smart man in his pragmatism, but not in a game of football chess.
As for Jerry Angelo...well, he needs someone to help him out with offensive draft choices in the worst way possible.
