Before that, salaries were anybody's guess. Former Kansas City guard Tom Condon, now a super-agent, remembers learning in a shower conversation that his backup was earning $65,000, or $15,000 more than his own salary. The Chiefs dug down and gave Condon $65,000 plus 2 more years, each with a $10,000 raise.
"I was just happy as hell and said, 'Let's sign,' " Condon said. And when the NFLPA's first salary survey came out in 1982, Condon learned that the Chiefs were an equal opportunity employer. Condon (10th round), right tackle Charlie Getty (second) and left tackle Matt Herkenhoff (fourth), all from an offense-heavy 1974 draft, each earned $130,000 in base salary in 1982. Left guard Brad Budde, their first-round pick in 1980, earned $90,000. Jack Rudnay, a Pro Bowl center, earned $175,000. Shockingly, Bill Kenney, the starting quarterback, also earned $130,000.
Dick Berthelsen, the union's general counsel, actually won a North American Soccer League case that concluded its union was entitled to salary data. The NFLPA jumped on the decision, publishing the "1982 NFLPA Base Salary Directory."

Yes, excellent move by the Bears FO. Big Toe has earned every penny, he has been stellar all year and getting a real push up the middle. When watching games back I see many times his push upfield alone has made for easy pickings for Brian, Lance, Pisa and Nick to step into the hole and cream the RB at or behind the LOS.
I also like the Mannelly signing and appreciate him for wanting to stay with the Bears, in the day and age of FA team loyalty is often a forgotten thing.
I also like the mentioning in the article about the more than likely signing of Olin Kreutz to an extension as I feel unlike so many here that he still has a year or two left in him and he is our overall best option at center IMHO. A very loyal and excellent Bear his whole career and one of my all time favorite players........

Stein really is brilliant, and like this.. here's a thought.. the SB he gives, if under the old contract, may not count as 2011 "new dollars" and might save us $5-$10 mill under cap by being "old" deals and not new deals for 2011..for the last 5 years, he's been ahead of the league and the trendsetter for rookie contracts, he might have something up his sleeve here also

BradBiggs #Bears special teams ace Corey Graham has 24 tackles this season, all of them solos. Next on team? Garrett Wolfe (17-11) & Brian Iwuh (17-9)

really like manelly, but the thing is more years in- the more the minimum is, think because manelly is now 12 years in the minimum salary is $1.4 mill,,which is alot for a Long snapper no matter how good, and Manelly is that good. That $1 mill difference will not matter in 2011, but at some point will and need to start looking for a replacement at the 400,00 range

And big toe showed his worth and with the rotation at both De/DT marinelli uses like having him and fits the rotation concept with the lower salary

Bears bring in four future punting candidates

    December 28, 2010 4:58 PM

    By Brad Biggs

The Bears brought in four punters for a tryout Tuesday morning at Halas Hall, getting a look at candidates for a futures contract when the season ends.

With veteran Brad Maynard positioned to be an unrestricted free agent, the Bears are expected to, at the minimum, introduce competition for the job. They got a look at four candidates in the kind of tough weather that Maynard has grown accustomed to in 10 seasons with the franchise.

A.J. Trapasso, the punter who infamously hit the giant video board at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in a 2009 preseason game; Brent Bowden, a sixth-round draft pick this year by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and T.J. Conley participated in the workout along with Dan Power, an Australian punter.

"After my workout with the Bears today I have a new found respect for Brad Maynard," Power wrote on his personal Twitter account. "Tough conditions."

Trapasso, an Ohio State product, has spent time with the Titans, Jets, Buccaneers and Broncos. Bowden was one of the final cuts at the end of the summer by the Buccaneers. Conley, an Idaho product, spent the past offseason with the New York Jets but could not unseat veteran Steve Weatherford.

Maynard, 36, is coming off a good game against the Jets. He had a 49-yard punt which was not returned with less than five minutes to play, and then hit a low liner that netted 54 yards after going off flier Marquice Cole's knee.

Maynard has expressed a desire to return to the Bears, but no contract discussions have taken place.

and this is what has me scratching my head. No other team seems interested in signing their top guys right now. Will teams have franchise tags? And if they can roll those players contracts into this season I would think guys like Mankins would have been signed by now

yep that is why think something to it.. once again the "cheap" label sure doesn't apply and spending when none others are, paints a different picture, and just IMO, stein been ahead on alot of his stuff, so wouldn't suprise me to see in a few months others follow or he found a loophole

Smart moves on the Bears part. Mannelly is the best long-snapper in the league in my opinion. The guy just doesn't blow a snap period. Someone posted a couple of weeks ago that he was the Bears most valuable player. That actually may be hard to argue with.

Toe has really stepped up and deserved to be re-upped and I think if we're smart we'll tie up Maynard for another couple of years. He's still on the best "spot punters" in the league and he's dependable as all hell.

As for the others I think that the Bears will make some offers to wrap most of them up as well. Adams, Manning, Roach, etc. are all core players and those are the guys JA likes to extend before they hit the market.
