C'mon DB, you'd have taken Bill Parcells over Jauron, right?

I'm glad that I was only a casual fan of the Bears during the Dick Jauron years. God, outside of that 2001 season, they were horrible. He did, however, have Brian Urlacher drafted on his watch, so that was a positive if there was any in his favor.

Try being a die hard in the Wannstedt era. ughhhhhh I'm sure someone here's got me beat on that tho. Unfortunately I became a bears fan the year AFTER they fired Ditka.

Back years ago in elementary school, the only way I can describe what I thought of Mike Ditka was that he was like a walking caricature. That hair, the mustache, the Ray-Ban sunglasses, the sweater vest, the tough guy attitude which he exuded...it all sort of made me look at him as this overtly macho person.

Too bad they didn't draft Marino instead of McMahon, he coulda added a decade onto his coaching career, and a couple of SB's...

I don't know if Marino would have been the same kind of quarterback playing in Chicago that he was while he was in Miami. Basically, the Dolphins changed their entire offensive philosophy to fit in with Marino's talents. If you recall, the 1972 Dolphins rushed for over 2,900 yards as a team, which was a record at the time. When Marino came along, Miami became a pass-happy offense. They were never as successful when they went away from the run and focused purely on passing, going to only one Super Bowl (Super Bowl IXX) in his entire career. I personally thought Don Shula's old style of offense in Miami prior to Marino was more conducive to producing championships, as it drew in the secondary to try and stop the run, where upon QB Bob Griese could toss a playaction pass to someone like, say, WR Paul Warfield, and really kill opposing defenses.
Shula's offenses in Baltimore were more balanced, with a nice combination of Johnny Unitas and RB Tom Matte.

That'd be on Shula then, wouldn't it? I certainly couldn't have seen Ditka allowing many of Walter's carries being taken away....

No -but would have taken bellichek, dungy, gruden, peyton, etc etc instead , if playing the "what if" game. The Point is the "name" coaches despite the rep's have *never* won a championship again, is a huge red flag.. and from parcells, gibbs, now shanny you are seeing these "names" when come back despite no one saying not great coaches , not only not getting it done, but unable to relate to today's players and rise their teams up, it is not a coincidence anymore, and despite "thinking" the names will be better all fcts, win/loss and no championships all point to it not being the correct move

While jauron and wanny bad.. Sorry those years can't hold a candle to having to live through the Abe gibron and dooley years, maybe because I have THAT perspective, I understand better what real awful football looks like and why sometimes do not get the negativity of today.

Never had a shot at marino, we had just drafted mcmahon in 1982 with the #5 over-all not taking a Qb in first the following year also,.. but "almost" took montana.. Finks was real high on montana, and because many were not real high on the skinny legged Qb, he was expected to go 4th-6th round..finks rolled the dice in 3rd and took willie mclendon instead( ughh!), hoping could pick up montana later and niners and walsh snatched him with the 82nd pick,, finks always regreted that one- how the 80;s would ahve been different with montana and payton and that "D"
