I'm on the side of those in favor of spending that money on the OL...it's a far more important need for us (plus I'm a huge "you win games on the LOS" guy).
Considering that we play more zone than man, we'd be over-spending by bringing in Asomugha. If we were a press-man team, he'd be worth it, but it doesn't take an "elite" shutdown man coverage CB to excel in our scheme. We've got Peanut, Jennings and DJ Moore (who I think could be special btw) at CB, and we would rarely use Asomugha's greatest strength.
I'd much rather spend that money on an OL like Mankins or Kalil...our gains would be greater and almost certainly more beneficial.

I get that we need to spend money on the OL, but I'm getting sick of giving up 215 passing yards per game because our secondary is playing like shit. If we get another corner via free agency, we can still get two offensive linemen like Mankins or Kalil. The mantra for Lovie Smith teams is that we have average to below average offenses, but we win because of our defense. The stronger our defense is, the less we have to rely on the offense to carry the day. Still, there is no reason other than the Bears' front office being cheap that we can't go out and spend money on three free agents. We're only 18th in players' salaries, so what is the harm of going up a few places if we really want to build a championship team?

Yea nick is right. I think hes played man his whole pro career in oakland so how good would he adjust to the cover 2 at age 30 !!! He is a very bright person and I wouldn't be surprised if he does go to a coverage defense and has success next year. But it won't be in Chicago.

After the Saints game, i would think they would be all over this one.

It's the scheme more than the players, which is actually part of my argument. Our scheme is primarily a Cover 2 Zone (or Tampa 2 as some call it) scheme with some Cover 2 man under. There will always be holes in coverages when you run a zone scheme, even if you put Asomugha on one side. Why would you want to spend a ridiculous amount of money for a CB who's greatest strength is man coverage when your philosophy is primarily zone? You would be paying too much for him considering you wouldn't be using him in the role he's best at.
Not to mention that A) we have some good CBs and B) if you wanted to pick up a CB in free agency, a guy like Lito Sheppard or Jason Allen would be far more affordable and the difference in performance would be almost negligible.
IMO the OL definitely needs to be addressed before the secondary does.

If it is possible for our philosophy to evolve (which I hope it would) perhaps we could use him in man type bracket coverage. I do agree though playing zone his man skills could erode. First priority is the O line.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

If there is not an ability to get both(not sure I buy that), then go after a top OL, but it would be nice to address both.

Where is the list of available free agents for this offseason? I think that 2-3 FA acquistions will be required to improve our standing for next season. I agree with KML and always have: our top priority is the OL. While it has gotten better throughout the season, it never molded into a "formidable" unit until after the bye week, and yet it still had some games where it gave up four sacks or more (Eagles, Lions, and most notably, the Packers, who sacked Cutler six times, most of which came in the second half).
But I still think we need to upgrade at cornerback. I'm totally content with the safeties. But as we have sat here and said time and again, Peanut is starting to lose a step, possibly from the strategy in place that we play our corners too far off the line of scrimmage, and D.J. Moore is still up and coming. I could see adding a Lito Sheppard or Jason Allen to the secondary and upgrading our

I think Seymour as a DT would work better, and we could still probably get mankins..

Maybe if Favre comes back, Richard Seymour can knock him on his ass like he hit Ben Roethlisberger.
