SB appearance, extension of 2-4 years
SB win, extension 4-5 years.
Agree if gets another Sb apperance he deserves something.. i don't get the "hate" or thiking no matter what you don't extend that's crazy and IMO makes no sense

I don't like him; and I think he had everything fall his way this year. But for a team that was expected to be sub .500 he and his staff have done a good enough job if they get to another SB. The last 3 years are still hard to swallow, I'd be more comfortable letting this contract end and see how the season went next year honestly...but getting to the sb twice in a decade is impressive, twice in 5 years is even more so, even if the other years were mostly duds and deserves something.

The question everyone should be asking is Lovie responsible for our good year or the Assistant coaches responsible for the good year? I think a lot of factors should be considered before we give Lovie Smith the keys to chicago.
1) Mike Martz is good for chicago but when we struggle he gets thrown under the bus
2) Rod Marrinelli, is he really good or is it having Urlacher, J. peppers on this years team healthy?
3) Easy Schedule, We faced a lot of teams that were playing their 2nd and 3rd string qbs.
4) The bears stayed healthy this year and it seems more like the players are playing this year instead of just collecting a check
5) Jay Cutler connecting with his wrs seems to be a plus where last year it was force the ball to Olsen or play rookies
6) Matt Forte healthy and less turnover in the red zone.
7) Devin Hester back where he belongs, returning punts and shortening up the field.
8) Some of the favored teams in the NFC did poorly this year. Dallas, Vikings and packers did not do well yet the packers managed to make the playoffs as a wild card.

DUD years are 4-12 3-13, 5-11... he hasn't done that since his rook year, YES 7-9 *is* dissapointing, but if that's the new "bottom" for this franchise, we could do alot worse. and let's face it.. 2008- one win in last game against texans( still looking for their first playoffs ever) from another playoff which would be 4 playoffs in 6 years and one win in 2009 or 2007 from 6 of 7 non losing seasons and 2 wins from not having a losing season since 2004... Which again while not the "best",, far, far away from the worst..and a complete 180 from the 1990's
lovie's 58 wins, 2nd in NFC( 1 win from first) and 5th over-all since 2005. if take a step back from the "personality" and just said would you want a coach with the best or 2nd best record in NFC last 5+ years...

I'm gonna save most of my comments on this until after the season is done. All I can reasonably commit to right now is that IF the Bears win the NFC Championship, and don't get hammered by the AFC champ in the Super Bowl, then I think the Bears should consider a one or two year extension with the proviso that the team not fall back like it did post 2006.
Although he has the undying support of his players I think that Lovie gets outcoached way too often and that he's among the worst game day tacticians in the NFL. His clock management is atrocious and he seems to be constantly in debate with himself over whether or not to challenge calls.
I'm not ready to give him any vote of confidence right now despite the winning season.

.500 seasons are never good seasons, and wonderfull he's the 5th winning coach; It'd be interesting to see who the top 10 are, and what their playaoff appearances look like compared to Lovie, b/c that is what really matters.

I'll agree that Lovie Smith isn't the best coach in the league. Luckily, he did the smart thing by surrounding himself with some smart cookies to make himself look better. Lovie and JA hired Martz, Marinelli, and Tice, and that has made a lot of difference in how the media perceives him.
I chalk up the bad seasons of 2007-09 to age on both the offensive and defensive lines. They were atrocious to say the least, and with the exception of 2008, we didn't really have a running game to really be able to quantify.

Lovie is not the best coach in the NFL. Anyone who says he is, is full of it.

Lovie Smith is the worst coach in the NFL because most of the bad one have already been fired.

Right, and your point is, Benji? LOL.
We have ourselves a serviceable coach in Lovie. He is a good organizer apparently, else we would not have produced four winning seasons in the past six years (not counting his first season of 2004, when the team still was suffering a hangover from being coached by Dick Jauron). The fact that he did surround himself with some of the best football minds around (Martz, Marinelli, Tice, Toub) speaks volumes. He understands that in order for him to be successful, he must have a networked brain trust, sort of like the owner of a major Fortune 500 corporation often has a CEO/Chairman run the executive board. In that way, he is very good. When it comes to making key decisions, however, he lacks a lot to be desire. This was evidenced in the loss to the Redskins on "the missed challenge" and his allowing Martz to go away from the run against the Packers two weeks ago.
