Bears vow they're ready for Seahawks' blitz

Bears vow they're ready for Seahawks' blitz

Last time, they gave up 6 sacks but stability should help now

Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice started to use the Week 6 game film as a refresher of what to expect from the Seahawks' defense in Sunday's divisional playoff game.

    Then Tice changed his mind.

"I kind of moved on, the game was so bad,'' Tice said of the regular-season meeting between the teams. "I looked at 19 plays with the line the other day and decided I couldn't do that to them. It was that bad.''

For those unfamiliar with the gory details, Jay Cutler was sacked six times as the Bears were 0-for-12 on third downs in the Seahawks' 23-20 victory at Soldier Field, including blitzing defensive back Jordan Babineaux's sack that resulted in a safety.

Lawyer Milloy had two sacks from his safety spot, Babineaux was credited with 1 1/2 while cornerback Roy Lewis brought down Cutler once.

The Bears' blitz radar certainly malfunctioned that afternoon.

"Every blitz is on the offense,'' center Olin Kreutz said. "I'll talk about my responsibility. But who's it on? Who gives a (crap)? We got sacked. And we'll just try to get that fixed.

"Any identification starts with me. If somebody doesn't understand who they have, I take that personally because that's my job.''

The Bears should comprehend fully what to expect if the Seahawks hit them with the same flurry Sunday. This is far from the tentative offense that took the field three months ago.

Cutler has become more adept at getting the ball out quicker, and the line finally has found continuity with Kreutz, Frank Omiyale, Chris Williams, Roberto Garza, and J'Marcus Webb together for the last nine games. Not to mention players such as receiver Johnny Knox understand their roles better in terms of Cutler's hot reads.

"The weak side, that's usually where they blitz from,'' Knox said. "I see an awful lot of those hots.''

But how many blitzes will the Bears see this time? According to ESPN stats, the Seahawks sent at least one defensive back on the blitz a season-high 44.7 percent of the time against the Bears as compared to 20.3 percent throughout the entire regular season. In their last two games against the Rams and Saints, the Seahawks blitzed less than 11 percent.

"We have to get a good feel for what they're going to do and (they have) calmed down a little bit since we played them,'' Cutler said, "But we have to prepare for anything because they have nothing to lose. Everyone, you're one and done. They could show us anything."

Tice fully expects the Seahawks to blitz, and blitz some more.

"They're going to have to find a way to get to the NFC Championship game,'' Tice said. "If you're playing the Bears, then you have to test them and see how much better they've gotten.''

If they blitz their DB's and Cutler can hit his hot reads off short drops we should back them off of that approach sooner rather than later. I do agree with Tice's point that they will blitz at least initially because disrupting the Bears offense and Cutler is about the only chance they have of winning.

They need to rewatch the Cowboys game film. They did great with the hot reads in that game.

exactly, you see the blitz, and go with the hot read to olsen or the WR in slot, or to a quick dump to forte where the blitz side is coming ad he will have a ton of space.. and like dallas and jets we end up with alot of big plays until stop

I hope they are ready because that was embarassing the first time they played Seattle. Other then the giants game that had to be their worst of the year.

And that's a big reason have alot of confidence this week depite i being probably the worst or 2nd wrst overall game, we still only lost by 3 and atualy scored the winningtd, aled back on a penalty.. So expect a much better effort, the "D" to actualy get to Old baldie and the "O" to not go 0-12 on third downs and forte to increase his 20+ yards

Bears' Defense Leads them to Playoffs

The Chicago Bears have missed the postseason for the three consecutive years, and in this fourth year, the drought is over. If you look at the talent on the roster of the Bears, you will know the reason.

Let's see how Brian Urlacher said.

"No, not at all," Urlacher said. "I think if we get a couple guys back, we're set up for a while. If you look at our team, depth-wise, if we get Olin (Kreutz) back and a couple other guys, we have Jay Cutler and Pep (Julius Peppers) signed for a while so I think we'll be set up. It would be good if we go out there and prove it for a while. Talent-wise, we're going to be good for a while."

Yes, this year's Bears have a lot of talents. The Bears did a good job in 2005 and 2006 season, but in the recent few years, they disappointed their fans. But never gave up...

I would expect a lot of 3 and 4 man rushes, along with the obligatory Tampa Two zone defense. The Bears can crush the Seahawks' offensive line, I think, but the real question is how will their offensive line do? Hopefully, we won't be like we were against the Packers after we stopped pounding the rock.

One other way to defeat their pass rush schemes is to use more rollouts, moving pockets, and maybe a naked boot or two. The Packers use that technique very effectively which, in addition to his mobility, makes Rodgers much less of a target. The Broncos also used those strategies when Cutler played here. That may be something that will surprise Seattle because we haven't used it much lately.
