He could also line up in the slot in a 4 WR set and force opponents to cover him with a LB or Safety where he'd have both a speed and size advantage.
I do agree with the fact that he could play a whole lot tougher and improve his YAC but one thing that we all put him down for was his blocking and he's shown some considerable improvement in that areas since last year. I think that Martz needs to design more plays that allow him to get mismatches in coverage and given that he'll be as good a TE as this offense needs.
The real crime in this TE spot is that Des Clark is sitting while Manu plays. Manu is nowhere near the pass receiver that Des is and I really question whether his blocking skills (the primary reason we signed him for the big $$$) are any better than any of the other TE's.
The only good play I saw Brandon Manumaleuna make this year was that 1st down conversion against Detroit. Granted, I didn't really start watching Bears games every week until the first Vikings game since I didn't know where I could go to watch them (Thanks to whoever it was for telling me about the online channel site), but I haven't seen him make a good play the whole second half of the season.

yeah feel bad for Dez, got a chance to talk with him in the lobby in carolina, he really is a nice guy and amazed took the time to talk to some of us fans on his time. he is a class act and deserved better than what has happened in 2010.
And dissapointd olsen was used better, esp as a WR sometimes or even slot, to take advatage of the size matchup's he causes

I think this seals the deal that everyone who said the TE means squat in Martz system is right. This is just another pass catching te that has become irrelevant due to Martz scheme. It doesnt say anything of the talent olsen has.
With Mamu playing the way he has I thought for sure Clark would be back in the game plan. The guy can block and catch best te we have had in a long time. I mean even Kellen Davis makes it on the field over Clark. I kind of wish they cut him so that he could have played this season somewhere.

Sadly, we won't know what happened to Dez until after the season is over and he's no longer a member of the team. I'd say his classiness is probably what is keeping him from confirming or denying whatever rumors we have heard.

Mo, if it means squat why do have 4 TE's on the roster; Olsen, Davis, Clark, and Manu. And why did they go to the trouble to sign that 4th TE (Manu) in the offseason which undoubtedly came at Martz's request.
I'd like to hear your justification for the comment that TE's mean squat in Martz's system. He sure as hell has enough of them on the offensive roster.

Well said Soul. When Olsen and K.Davis are better blockers than Manu then there is a problem.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

I meant pass catching tes my bad I had to spell it out any further then what everyone else said all offseason. Look at Martz history and show me where he properly utilized a pass catching te and get back to me. Vernon Davis earned his highest paid te ever contract thanks to them booting Martz. TEs are just not Martz focal point on this offense I dont know why everyone gets into a hissy fit about it. They are used for blocking and Olsen stats prove it

Mo I agree that he doesn't feature the TE in his passing game, but then again has he ever had a guy with Olsen's unique skills. I expected Olsen's stats to drop but they haven't as much as I might have thought they would. Martz said that Olsen would need to improve his blocking in order to play and he has as far as I can see. Martz had more experienced WR's as well when he ran the Rams. Lacking that I'd think he would want to use Olsen more not as a traditional in line TE but more in the fashion of an H-Back/WR and I think he's done that.
Olsen doesn't grab the attention some of the others do but he still seems to be a vital part of Martz's offense and I can't see the Bears trading him as long as he keeps improving his blocking and he retains his receiving skills. Unfortunately it looks like Des Clark will become the odd man out next year. It's a shame because I think he still has some good football in him but in all likelihood Martz won't part with the "pineapple" he brought in to be his all-star blocking TE.

Vernon Davis?
and in san fran name me one wr on their team up until drafting crabtree? And he still didnt use Davis.
I think this season sealed the deal to me that Martz just will not use Olsen. And when he did use him he would drop the ball. And Im not hoing on Olsen for it more so just not a fit on our team. He has surprisingly blocked better I give him that.
The existence of Clark our best all around TE really made Mamu a surprise move to me. Hell we even had Lance Louis on he roster. But Im not the personel director lol.

and fwiw it is not the air corryel system that doesnt use the tes. Gonzales in KC proved it could be run right with a TE under Al Saunders play calling. Just for some reason Martz just never bothered with that. It is in his history. Maybe he just got used to having two hof wrs to game plan with
