I'm not downplaying Vernon Davis but I still think that Olsen has broader skills. Not that he's better but just that he's a differnt type of player than Davis. As for WR thing I was referring to the Rams not his brief time with SF but I still agree with you on the point that TE's aren't a big part of his passing game. Martz learned that with the Bears personnel he had to go to the run more than he probably would have liked but he did and it paid off. Maybe he'll wake up and use Olsen better in the passing game, who knows?
I guess the important thing is that Olsen seems to be accepting his altered role very well and not complaining about not getting the ball. I'll leave it up to Cutler to deal with Martz as far as his choices of receivers are concerned.

idk see that unique skill set you see. I see a guy who wowed people in combine workouts but had an aloof college career. Davis had a college career that garnered himself as a top ten pick and plays like it in the right offense of course. And Davis like Olsen was lost on Martz and both te had blocking problems.
And Olsen was really forced on Martz. IDK if you caught the articles confirming we almost had a deal in place to send Olsen to the Pats but the deal broke down cause their main target in the draft fell to them in the second round. After that the best they could get for him was a 5th rounder. That to me tells me his worth around the league a 5th rounder for a guy that shows up and doesnt cry about his role.

I like Greg Olsen. He's a good safety outlet, and he's highly underrated. If Martz would ever use him like he should be used, he would be capable of making it as an All-Pro in the league.

all pro riiiiiight
-witten
-gonzales
-davis
-cooley
-winslow
are just some of the names he needs to beat out to be that guy. good luck with that theory

Make him a wide receiver.

Of course, if you're a member of the Chicago Bears, you automatically are shitcanned out of being an All-Pro because *everyone* in the media knows that this franchise sucks.
Seriously, though, does the negativity about our team ever end? I can't find ten people on this site who has anything positive to say about this franchise. 4th dogs Lovie Smith and all of his coaches despite the fact that the team is markedly improved over last year's, and now I'm seeing Motown dog Greg Olsen and say that he has little to no shot at becoming an All-Pro TE. He's a very talented player, and he's only getting better every year. He has blocked far more this year than any previous year, so why the negativity?
Maybe instead of me being a Lovie Smith nuthugger, you guys are Trent Dilfer/Mark Schlereth nuthuggers.

OK mo here we go again. Can you honestly tell me that Vernon Davis has the size to speed ratio that Olsen has and can or has Davis ever been used effectively as a WR? Just because Martz hasn't dialed that up yet doens't mean that Olsen hasn't proven that he can do it!
Now let's deal with the second issue. New England, a team that ordinarily doesn't make many personnel mistakes, must have thought that Olsen was worth more than a 5th rounder since they tried to trade for him offering more than that. You may have noticed that they picked up two pretty good young TE's in the draft last April yet they thought that Olsen was a better fit than either of those two. Doesn't it make sense that Olsen had greater value to them than the rookies?
If Olsen played with the Patriots or any other team with a top notch QB and an OC who did use his TE's like the Pats, Colts and Cowboys do then I believe Greg Olsen would get a lot more consideration than he probably ever will here. The guy has improved his play in one way or another ever since he arrived and if anyone needs to go it's "the pineapple" Manumaleuna and not Olsen.
The defense rests!

if you are this sensitive wait till you see my garret wolffe analysis!
see you take everything I say as a negative. Calling spades is not a negative it just is what it is. If facts hurt that is not my problem but yours alone. Are you going to get mad if someone say AP is better then Forte? Are you going to get mad if someone says Payten Manning is better then Cutler? Get real

size? no he is about 3 or 4 inches shorter. Speed? Hell yeah he has it. Without a doubt he has it. Are we falling into the trap JA does with combine results? Im looking at since Martz was fired in san fran he has two 50 plus catch seasons both for over 900 yards with junk ass qbs! nuff fricken said comparing this guy to Olsen. If you want to go further look at their college careers.
NE decided a rookie TE was more worthwhile then Greg olsen. Another win in my argument
Now no where did I say Olsen completely sucks and he has to go lol. I said Martz doesnt use him might as well get an asset for him and the org believes the same thing when they tried trading him. It is not my fault they dont use him. Its Martz fault. Under Turner we had Olsen as the focal point and he did fine with it. Teams shut him down only cause our wrs suck ass(I probably will get another cry baby in this thread for that comment). And like before I agree shamooo needs to go. But we still need a blocking te maybe Louis or find another Gilmore type. Doesnt need to be shammoo to block lol.
My main critique of Olsen he isnt tough enough to be a te he is more of a wr. Even the classic catching tes in the league all have that toughness that Olsen doesnt.

This year, w/a better team, a better qb in Olsen's favor(I don't think anyone could question that) Here are their stats:
Olsen: 6'5" 255 lbs, 41 rec's , 404 yards, 9.90 ypc, longest rec 39 yards, 5 td's(td's per catch 8.2), 1st downs 22, 20+ yard rec's 3
Davis 6'3" 250 lbs 56 rec's, 914 yards, 16.3 ypc, longest rec 66 yards, 7 td's(td's per catch 8), 1st downs 35, 20+ yard rec's 16, 40+ yard rec's 5.
Yes Davis is a better TE; they are basically the same size. Davis since Martz left, has become the player most people thought he would be as a pro(doubled to tripled his yards and td's, and improved his rec's).
Olsen has a couple inches and lbs, but sure doesn't play like it. Also, Olsen is having his worst statistical year since his rookie season..and that includes playing w/KO and RT and Cutler and RT, Martz does not use the TE, never has and
