The NO OL in the 1st draft.

    Free Agents

WR Braylon Edwards [5 years 28 million/12 guaranteed]
OG Davin Joseph [5 years 32 million/13 guaranteed]
    S Jarrad Page [2 years 3 million/1 guaranteed]

    Draft

    1[29] DT Drake Nevis [LSU] 6’2” 292lbs.

The DT talent in this draft appears to be stronger then the OL talent. The Bears can get a better value at DT then they can at the more needed OT. Nevis looks like the prototype cover-2 DT that lacks size but is explosive and disruptive up the field.

    2[61] OG James Carpenter [Alabama] 6’5” 315lbs.

Carpenter has started his climb up draft boards and it started with Mike Mayock saying that he has missed on Carpenter and that he has been very good at the Senior Bowl. Carpenter played LT at Alabama, but appears to have the power and base to move into OG and bring the pass protection that the Bears need.

    3[93] C Jake Kirkpatrick [TCU] 6’2” 304lbs.

A solid technician that can be groomed behind Olin Kreutz. He does not have elite physical tools but can be the leader of the line.

    4. CB Chris Culliver [South Carolina] 6’1” 202lbs.

A big physical CB that can press and tackle.

    5. WR Vincent Brown [San Diego State]

Solid routes and great hands, but a lack of elite speed keeps him from climbing. The Bears need guys who run better routes.

    6. P Derek Epperson [Baylor] 6’3” 240lbs.

Brad Maynard is on his way out and the Bears can get a big legged replacement eady.

Doesn't have "elite physical tools"? Doesn't that mean he's just gonna get manhandled by bigger DT's?

There's a guy at Baylor who may turn out to be a well kept secret, Danny Watkins. The guy has the size, 6'4" 310lbs, the pros are looking for but he has some question marks about him that may drop him into the 3rd or 4th round. Number one is his age, 26 and number two is lack of experience and polish as an OG, the spot he'd most likely be drafted for. At Baylor he was an OT with only two years as a starter.

One positive about him in addition to his size and strength is that he's said to very coachable and eager to learn. This might be a decent prospect to look at in the Senior Bowl and Combine. I like the thought of handing Tice some young coachable talent to help rebuild the Oline.

The thought of Braylon Edwards as a FA intrigues me. The Bears wanted him to fall to them in the draft but he didn't. He's got the tools but he's also been inconsistent whenever I've watched him play. Since Cutler seems to feel more comfortable with taller targets Edwards just may be the guy to partner with Knox now that it's apparent that Hester will never rise to the level of a #1 WR.

I'd rather we pulled in a guy like this than take a chance on using a high draft pick on one in order to get someone close to his ability. Needless to say the price has to be right. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bears had him in their sights come free agency time.

He's not exactly a secret in the draft community. He's just too old for a lot of scouts to consider. He'll be 27 next year and despite his obvious tools and natural talent, you are talking about a guy who just started playing football and might not even hit his stride until he turns 30. So on top of getting an inexperienced over-ager who still needs a good amount of coaching, you are getting a guy who has already entered his physical prime in a time where he doesn't have all the skills and knowledge to best utilize the bulk of it.

Edwards is like Roy Williams. They make those acrobatic catches that give you those warm fuzzy feeling in your gut that makes you want them. But at the end of the day tally up their drops and all you are getting is overpriced hype. Edwards has everything but catching ability which I dont think we would bother with.

I really like Nevis, if he's still there at 29, Bears should definitely consider it. Definitely take some Oline in two and three if going D in the first though.
