    Polamalu beats Matthews for top defensive player


    DALLAS -- Now that the voters have chosen Troy Polamalu over Clay Matthews for The Associated Press 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, the two stars can prove their worth against each other on the field.
    In the Super Bowl.
    Pittsburgh safety Polamalu received 17 votes Monday from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who cover the league, edging Green Bay linebacker Matthews by a hair -- two votes.

    Despite missing two games, in which Pittsburgh went 1-1, Polamalu became the sixth Steeler to win the award. He had seven interceptions this season along with 63 tackles, but made his mark with big plays. In a late-season victory at Baltimore, his leaping tackle forced a fumble that set up the winning touchdown.

    Well, I can guarantee you my hair's more expensive," Polamalu said.

    Also receiving votes for AP Defensive Player of the Year were Chicago end Julius Peppers with six and linebacker Brian Urlacher with two; and Baltimore safety Ed Reed and nose tackle Haloti Ngata, one each.

    Sure he gets some awesome hits but he also wiffs allot. Not the greatest in my book but he is good.

    Um, maybe you missed the part where he had 63 tackles and 7 interceptions.

    Ed Reed may not have as many tackles but he has 8 int and missed six games. Also according to NFL.com, 73 safeties got more tackles than Polamula. Devin McCourty got 82 tackles and 7 ints. So by that logic he should be NFLDPOY. Like I said he is good just not great.

    73 safeties had more tackles than polamalu? Lol.

    Anyhow, he's one of the very best and makes a huge impact on that team, which plays into the POY title.

    I'd venture to say that he's great, even if a player or two has better stats.

    troy's value goes waaaay beyond just numbers, like mike rown in early 2000's here befoe the injuries- its his leadership, its how he elevates all around him to be better and most importantly when need a big play or tackle, he makes them!...their "D" is alot bettr when he plays then when he misses games- they won with big ben down, think only .500 last few years when he has missed games speaks volumes

    Dan, what do you think about Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs passing on the Pro Bowl? I recall that Urlacher passed on his last Pro Bowl as well. These players certainly appreciate the honor of being selected, but why should they expect coaches, writers, players and fans to spend their vote for them if they aren't going to participate? Garry Vosahlik, Batesville, Ind.

    I'm with you Gary. I understand these players are exhausted and beat up physically and emotionally at the end of the season, but I believe they have a responsibility to play in the Pro Bowl if they are voted. It's an honor that should not be taken lightly. With so many front line players backing out of the Pro Bowl, the quality of the game is diluted greatly. Playing in the Pro Bowl is something you do for the greater good of the NFL, as well as for self promotion. For players who might someday be in the discussion for the hall of fame, it's another feather in their caps.

    Yes 73 more safeties about 142 defensive players got more tackles than Polamalu. You can apply the same logic to Urlacher or most key players in the NFL. But either way it just shows you it is a popularity contest.
