Players rate Soldier Field among worst grass fields

DALLAS -- An NFL Players Association survey of 1,619 players released Thursday ranked Soldier Field the third-worst natural grass field in the league, putting the home of the Chicago Bears ahead of only the Oakland Coliseum and Pittsburgh's Heinz Field.

The Arizona Cardinals' University of Phoenix Stadium was voted the best of the NFL's 18 grass fields, beating out the home stadiums of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers and Carolina Panthers.

Oddly, in a separate "Best Fields" ranking, Soldier Field was voted second-worst, with Heinz Field -- the lowest-rated field in the "Worst Fields" rankings -- moving up to the No. 16 slot.

Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis was voted to have the best artificial surface, with the Minneapolis Metrodome being labeled the worst.

Nearly 90 percent of players polled believed artificial infill turf causes more soreness and fatigue than grass fields.

I'm tired of all the talk about the playing surface. It's the same for both teams. If anything use it to your advantage. Talk about it and make other teams not want to play on it. Give them something to think about.

I hope they leave Soldier Field as it is, a grass field.

It's not designed for a "speed" team like ours. The Bears were, 6-4 at home, which is NOT a good thing..If not a dome, we at least need good grass to play on, that way our WR's route running can be fully scrutinized..

I'm all for grass fields, but there needs to be a major change. The Bears need to finally find their balls and tell the chicago park district what they think about the field. You cannot host concerts, high school football games, college football games (dunno if they have done that yet), soccer games, etc on a grass that's going to be used by a professional football team throughout the year. it's completely unprofessional and it just shows that the park district just cares about money and nothing else. The weather+completely unnecessary use of the grass = a complete fcking mess of a professional football field.

It's an absolute MUST FIX, as much as the o-line is, because this team is built for speed, and spinning your tires in the mud kinda negates movement, eh?

Wow, thats a pretty harsh statistic.

Honestly, i think they should go with whatever the Bears players want to do...since they are the ones who have to play on it, i could care less what OTHER players think of it. Steelers have the worst grass field, but it didnt seem to stop them from getting to the Superbowl, nor did our field stop the Packers.

What article is this from? I read that the Bills were ranked worst turf and the Raiders were ranked worst grass.

“I think he did [tarnish his legacy]. Not only this season, but the last few seasons, going back and forth [on retirement] and bouncing to a few different teams. I think about it, and I have to really think hard to think back to when he was a Green Bay Packer and when he played his best football and was in Super Bowls and when he became the Brett Favre we all know."
