Moving up in 2011..................
After watching the playoffs and yesterdays matchup I can see a few things that absolutely need to be addressed this offseason if the Bears are going to have any chance of moving ahead of the Packers in the NFCN.
1) An inside pass rusher. We get great play out of the DE spot from Peppers and Izzy but routinely get no pressure up the middle. Against a guy like Rodgers that's a death knell. Tommy Harris just isn't cutting it anymore and with what he's due in $$$ this year trading him if we can would be our best bet.
Either Melton is able to step into that spot or we need to draft either a 3T penetrator/pass rusher or get a 350lb widebody with enough strength and athleticism to simply bull rush his guy into the passing lane. A strong inside rush is a key to the success of Lovies defense (and neither is going away) and right now we just don't have it.
2) A legitimate power back to share carries with Forte and come in on short yardage and goaline plays. Look what Mendenhall was able to do against the Packers yesterday. The sad part was that by getting so far behind they eventually abandoned what had been working so well early in the game.
If Unga is not the right guy then again I say that we draft a guy who can fill that role. Despite other offensive successes we were downright pitiful in short yardage and on the goaline. Chester Taylor isn't the solution for this and never will be. To me he was a poor investment.
3) OK, I'll admit it. We do need help at WR. We do need a guy like the Canadian we just signed. Somebody with some size, good hands and decent speed. Cutler seems to want bigger targets than we have now and it's time to get him what he's been asking for. We have upfield speed in Knox and Hester and good hands great routes in Bennett. What we're lacking is a guy with size who combines those attributes.
Either we find him in FA or we draft him but we really can't do without him anymore.

Sadly this team is old all around, esp on DEF. After years of failure of drafting anyone of substance to help out, we are back to square one in the draft DEF, and let offense take care of itself.
IMO this team is lacking at
DT
OL
WR
DB
I can't see the bears being able to fix every issue in this draft, or the next. As I have zero conference in Bears MNGT for drafting anyone of quality, as for prior history has showcased my stance.

I don't know either if Melton is the answer at 3tech but I believe we should draft another and platoon them like we have done with Toe and Adams at NT. Toe is decent playing 3tech but I think he's better suited to NT.

Jimmors that goes without saying. It's been the main if not only topic of conversation around here for months. Tice has gotten improvement from the guys we have but our number one target in FA and/or the draft should be an offensive lineman. We all agree on that. What I'm trying to point out are a couple of other areas that need help of a very specific kind of help not a complete makeover of the entire unit.
There's no denying the need to improve the interior of the Dline as it relates to the pass rush. The present group, as good as they are, just isn't getting that part done.
We were missing a back who can consistently get the tough yards all year long and it showed every time we got in a position where we needed one. How many times did we blow scores against others goaline stands and how often did we find the need to pass frequently on third and short?
Cutler has asked for a bigger target ala Brandon Marshall and we've yet to provide him with one. Maybe DA will finally step up or the new guy Fantuz will be the one but both of these guys have produced virtually nothing in their NFL careers to date so picking up another canidate in the middle of the draft or finding a diamond in the rough in FA should rank pretty high. Despite his drops look at Jordy Nelsons's effectiveness yesterday and if I remember correctly he played pretty well in the clutch catch department against us as well.

Soul, I'm an Auburn guy and still I can't see why people here love DA so much. Isn't this like his 5th team, or something to that affect. Did 4 other teams miss out on this great gem that somehow the bears found?? Name me another WR squad in the NFL, that he would be on and active?
WR is a joke here, we all know that. But, I have less faith in this MNGT team to get someone of value, as in now almost 10 years we have had ZERO WR worth a damn here.
Also I don't know what the BEARS sit in regards to salary.. but if they put the cap back on, how much are the bears going to be able to spend, to fix holes from their failure to draft properly?

Great questions Anthrax. DB54 has posted the salary cap stuff in a sticky but until a new CBA is negotiated I don't if anyone will know exactly where they stand. If the recent past is of any good I think the Bears will spend as much as they can to plug the holes. The defense is aging and the current widow isn't all that wide unless we can figure out a new way to reload on the fly.
As for DA I'm with you on your position. Every time it looks like he may step up he falls back and to that's one of the main reasons we need to find some help in the oversized WR department.

I think if you fix the OL Taylor and Forte would both be in a situation to do this. That being said, I'd still like to see Wolfe and Bell go(I actuall like bell but don't see the need for him on the team) and get a big thuggin' and buggin' rb to get tough yards.
Need interior DL and DB help. nothing to add there.
Definately need WR help, funny how that was going to be shown to be one of our strengths, and was a weakness all year when we really needed their help.

Agreed. Fix the OL, and maybe find a bruising huge fullback to block for the two we have. I'm giving Taylor a huge pass for this season, because of that line. I also think his presence was very good for Forte.
