Logan Mankins Franchise Tagged by Patriots
The Patriots became the first team to officially use the franchise tag on a player this year when they placed the tag on guard Logan Mankins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The NFLPA disputes the league’s ability to use the tag, and it’s quite possible this original designation won’t mean much in the long term.
In the short term, this was a fully expected no-brainer move by the Patriots to retain the rights to one of their most valuable players. Schefter estimates the cost of the tag for offensive linemen should be around $10.1 million, so Mankins is due for a huge pay increase whether he gets a long-term deal or not. (ESPNBoston.com’s Mike Reiss points out Mankins will make more in 2011 than his whole career by far if he signs the tender.)
The Patriots and Mankins have experienced a stormy relationship over the last year, but Mankins was all business when he returned to the team after a prolonged absence to open the ’10 season. At the Pro Bowl, Mankins sounded unexcited about returning to the Patriots in 2011; he may not have a choice now.
It’s also possible the team could trade Mankins like they once did to Tebucky Jones when he was given the tag in 2003.

Now they will try and rape some team like they did KC when they did this with their QB.

Key for Angleo to piss away our draft picks.

Interesting!
What are the implications now to get him? Is it a first and a third?
I don't thin the pats want to keep him. This looks like a move that is made for the purpose of getting something of vale for him. Obviously once he's traded they will negotiate a contract that isn't quite what his franchise tag is for.
Its a bold move by the pats, because all trades are contingent on the CBA. Obviously they think a deal will be made before they have to pay him this money.
Depending on how much is required to get him (a proven guard) I would be ok with giving up draft pics to get him.

I think there is a over-fixation on this guy. Would it be nice to have him? Yes. Is it wise to give up more picks at the expense of depth for the rest of the team? I believe no. If Cwill can't play LT then we still need to draft one and behind on material talent. I believe the Bears can garner FA help on the O-line and still keep a full compliment of draft picks.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

On this site there is. I think we should just use our draft picks to fix the OL.

That's why I asked what it takes to get him now.
We can use our first round pick on something not guaranteed (chris williams) or we can get a young, proven prowbowl guard.

One lineman is not going to magically fix the team. We have to see the bigger picture. The line needs fixed and we need some help in other spots as well.
Without weaponz it's just another airline!
I am here to chew bubble gum and kick butt and I am all out of bubble gum!

the problem is you get hit TWICE, first by losing the draft picks AND by having to give him a huge contract( not doing this unless signing him long term), which really hurts the cap space and inability to get anyone else, and for a guard that isn't a risk i'd take.
Rather get much cheaper contract draft picks in first and 3rd and take that risk AND then get 2-3 F/A's( ie a jason blaylock or the raven guy who either one woudl be a alot cheaper) to help fill other needs to supplant the draft picks... a Qb about the only position i'd ever give up multiple picks for
