Titans have interest in Bears OL coach Tice
Titans have interest in Bears OL coach Tice
By Brad Biggs
The offensive line will be one of the main focuses for the Bears this offseason, and now they might have to wait to see what happens with Mike Tice.
An NFL source said the Titans are interested in talking with Tice about becoming the offensive coordinator for new head coach Mike Munchak. It's unclear whether the Bears will grant permission for Tice to interview for the job as he has one more year on his contract. The Titans fired DeKalb native Mike Heimerdinger last week.
Bears coach Lovie Smith long has offered support for assistants when they have opportunities for advancement. Although moving from position coach to coordinator is a promotion, NFL teams are required only to grant permission if an assistant has an opportunity to become a head coach. Efforts to reach Tice for comment were unsuccessful.
According to ESPN, the Jets denied offensive line coach Bill Callahan permission to interview with the Titans for the position last week. Callahan also has the title of assistant head coach, so perhaps the Bears could offer Tice a similar position. Last year, the Packers denied quarterbacks coach Tom Clements permission to interview with the Bears for the coordinator job that went to Mike Martz.
In mid-February, it would be difficult for the Bears to find a replacement for Tice, who Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo have called one of the league's best line coaches. Most of the coach shuffling is complete so the pool of candidates isn't deep. The unit remains a work in progress under Tice, and the team figures to be in the market for at least two linemen.
Tice made seventh-round draft pick J'Marcus Webb into a personal project and Webb started 14 games at right tackle, including the postseason. The Bears used five starting line combinations in the first eight games so, it wasn't a coincidence the offense began to perform better once the shuffling was completed.
What the team will do with former first-round draft pick Chris Williams is a key question after he played left guard most of last season. He was supposed to be the left tackle of the future before injuries sidetracked him.
It also remains to be seen if Frank Omiyale is the left tackle of the future. Center Olin Kreutz will be an unrestricted free agent.
The Bears have replaced two assistant coaches this offseason. Defensive line coach Eric Washington left for the same job with the Panthers and assistant special teams coach Chris Tabor is a coordinator with the Browns. Washington and Tabor both were coming out of contract.

I hope they say no. But that isn't like Lovie.

I hope they say yes, but Tice decides to stay.

tice was never martz's choice anyway. tice was hired by angelo months before
martz was even interviewed. martz should have his own choice for offensive
coaches to implement his philosophy, however irrelevant or odd it may seem to us fans.
instead he got stuck with tice and drake as wr coach.

Well, I am glad he got "stuck" with Tice. As he is likely one of the best OL coaches there are.

I hope Tice stays but uses this as leverage to get the linemen he needs.

This is very bad.
You cannot look at the on field performance this year and see Tice's importance.
The real importance of Tice was in this offseason where he was going to scout and assist in an offseason that seemed to be focused on the OL.
Look what Tice did with a 7th round OT, imagine what he was going to do with a 1st or 2nd round pick.

In an almost strange way, I hope that Mike Martz gets a head coaching job so that Mike Tice can get promoted to offensive coordinator. That way, we will focus on the run more and building the offensive line.

I don't know about all that I think Tice wanting to run is a nice counter to Martz wanting to throw. Don't know if they get along but it is a nice adversarial concept.
