I still can't believe that the NFL does not have their own statistical analysis of ST and things like this.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Yeah is kinda suprising the NFL hasn't even adapted his rankings or come up with their own, esp as its 1/3 of the game. Though Gosslin's stuff pretty comprehensive

Bears' special teams ranked NFC's best

    February 14, 2011 11:42 AM | 1 Comment

    By Brad Biggs

The Bears wound up tied for tops in the NFC in special teams in the ratings system popularized by Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin.
His annual rankings were released Sunday and the Bears placed fourth overall, their highest finish since being No. 1 in the NFL in 2006 and 2007. The New England Patriots were tops in the league followed by the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns. The Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders tied the Bears.

How important are special teams? It's worth noting seven of the top 10 teams qualified for the playoffs, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were ninth. But the Green Bay Packers ranked 29th and they won Super Bowl XLV. As Gosselin notes, the New Orleans Saints ranked 29th a year ago when they won the Super Bowl. So special teams is worth a lot, but if you have a high-powered offense and a good defense, you can get by.

Some of the time. The San Diego Chargers had a highly ranked offense and defense and they finished last in special teams, a product of allowing five touchdowns in that phase and having five kicks blocked. Three losses were directely attributed to special teams and San Diego failed to make the playoffs at 9-7.

In the 22 categories used to devise the rankings, the Bears were No. 1 in punt returns, average starting field position and opponent net punting. With Brad Maynard, the Bears ranked last in gross punting at 40.1 yards.
