Bears Focus on OL at the Combine [DH]

Bears’ focus on offensive linemen at combine?

    By Bob LeGere
All things considered, the Bears probably would be content to enter the alleged 2011 season status quo on defense and special teams.
But the offense is another matter, which is why general manager Jerry Angelo and Bears coaches and scouts will be looking more closely at players on that side of the ball during this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, which begins Wednesday in Indianapolis.
“I’m excited about the direction our offense is going,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “Our defense … we have some special players on that side of the ball. We made a stand this year to get back on top and hopefully all three phases we’ll be talking about next year.”
But that won’t happen without an infusion of talent on offense. Since the Bears aren’t expected to be major players in free agency, which is uncertain with the labor dispute still unresolved, that leaves the draft.
While the defense was top 10 in most of the significant categories and special teams finished fourth overall in the Dallas Morning News’ comprehensive rankings, the offense did not rank above 21st in any key category.
The offense was decidedly better at the end of the season than it was when the season opened, and it showed some encouraging signs for the future.
“It just has to come together,” Angelo said. “I feel good about what the offense did given we had a first-year coordinator (Mike Martz) coming in here, a new offensive line coach (Mike Tice), a whole new offense, (and) a new cast of young players.”
But the offensive line struggled all season to protect quarterback Jay Cutler, and it stumbled through some difficult games against top teams.
The Bears scored just 3 points in a 14-point loss to the New York Giants in which Cutler was sacked nine times in the first half. And they were held to 7 points in a 29-point loss to the New England Patriots and just 3 points in the regular-season-ending loss to the Green Bay Packers, in which the defense allowed just 10 points.
That’s why the Bears are expected to use their first-round pick (No. 29 overall) on an offensive lineman.
There are several offensive tackles with first-round ability, led by USC’s Tyron Smith, Colorado’s Nate Solder, Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi and Boston College’s Anthony Castonzo, a Lake Zurich High School graduate.
Many early mock drafts have all four off the board by the 29th pick, but if any of them fall to the Bears, they’d be thrilled.
Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft has them taking Villanova offensive tackle Ben Ijalana in the first round, but Mississippi State’s Derek Sherrod is rated higher on many draft boards.
Another consideration could be Florida guard-center Mike Pouncey, whose twin brother Maurkice was a Pro Bowl center for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season as a rookie.
Other than offensive line, the most likely offensive position to receive draft-day attention is wide receiver. Although that position isn’t a desperate need for the Bears, a big, physical weapon would complement the youthful speed that already exists.
Georgia’s A.J. Green will be long gone by No. 29, and so will Alabama’s Julio Jones. Maryland’s Torrey Smith, Boise State’s Titus Young and Pittsburgh’s Jonathan Baldwin all could be available to the Bears, but it would be a shock if they passed up an offensive lineman with their first pick.
Only once in the past eight years have the Bears used a first-round pick on an offensive lineman, and in that time they’ve only selected one offensive lineman in the first three rounds. They took Chris Williams 14th overall in 2008, with inconsistent results.
The intention was for Williams to be the Bears’ left tackle for the next decade. So far he has started seven games at left tackle, 11 at right tackle, and the final 13 games last season at left guard with mixed reviews.

This is the line that scares me because I doubt we can deal with all of the problems facing this team in the draft.

wouldn't put much stock in that, legere also said bears would never sign peppers or be a player in the F/A market last year either.. he's still stuck in the 1990's FWIW

This pretty much says it all doesn't it. I don't see CWill as being a total bust but he's nowhere near the player the Bears expected him to be. Neither he or Omiyale are destined to be the type of dominating LT we need so it's time for JA to fess up to his sins of ignoring his Oline for far too long and get the guys he needs NOW!

If that takes moving up in the 1st round to secure a guy like Carimi then he needs to get over his ususal habit of not doing it and not be so cute for a change. If we lose the guy we want to someone picking just in front of us like we did three years ago when the Broncos nabbed Clady and we had to settle for Williams I will be mightily pissed and so should a few million others. That kind of bullshit from JA has gone on far too long. This is the year he needs to step up to the plate draft wise and show that he can solve this teams problems that way and not just in FA with guys like Tait, Brown, Miller and Omiyale. Even when it did work it didn't work for long due to age.

There are some young guards out there in FA who have been starters for their respective teams and will come far cheaper than any established FA LT. So get one and then draft one as well! The mid rounds are usually full of decent OG prospects and Tice has shown that he knows how to improve players with his coaching.

LeGere is being a fool if he thinks we can solve the WR issue in the draft. Anyone picked at that position that low in the draft is a true gamble that we won't know whether or not we've won for at least two to three years. Once again he needs to use FA to make a big splash on a difference maker like Peppers but this time on the offensive side of the ball. Go after Sidney Rice balls to the wall just as soon as we know the new ground rules and if he spurns the offer then drop back to Malcom Floyd. Either one of those guys are capable of becoming the offensive equivalent of Peppers to this team.

My only advice to JA as a fan is, "You know what you have to do so just do it"!

with the amount of picks we have and the amount of holes I see us trading out of the first if all the better oline prospects are gone. A move like that could also free up some money to add a FA

Let all the scouts gather and collect data and cut the tape. Give it all to Tice. Let him interview the prospects. Let him work them out. Let him make the decision on who we select. Him and ONLY him.... PLEASE.

Mo, I wouldn't disagree with that move but only if there's no way we get an Olineman or DT who can step in and play immediately at that spot. If JA uses that #1 on the best guy still on his board and that guy plays WR or CB then he should be castrated and then forced to swim Lake Michigan "lengthwise" in mid-winter!

Coloradans, home of the Rockie Mountain Oyster, have plenty of castration devices at our disposal. There's always one within reach. You get his swimming trunks ready ok?

2011 NFL combine thread- results and who impr

    Combine

What a visit to Indy is like for these NFL prospects. Greg Gabriel

If anyone thought going to the Combine was fun for the 350 or so prospects, think again. They are four very grueling days for each prospect starting from just about they moment they arrive in Indianapolis.

    Day 1
When each player arrives the first thing he does is register and find out what group he is in. Everything at the Combine is done in groups starting with the offensive linemen. There are usually two groups per position. Today, the offensive linemen come in and the first of two groups of running backs. Tomorrow, it will be the second group of running backs followed by the receivers. After registration, it’s off to the hospital for pre-medical testing. Here, some X-Rays may be taken along with other tests. If a player has some known medical history the X-Rays are done just to save some time. After they get back from the hospital they go to a room for Cybex testing, which measures leg strength. Years ago they used to do this test a day before each player ran his 40. Now it’s done on arrival day because the test can tire a player’s quad muscles so much. To make it simple the motion used in the test is similar to a leg extension but it is done rapidly until muscle fatigue sets in. For those of you who know what muscle burn is, this test can be the ultimate “burn.” By doing it on arrival day, the player has almost three days rest before he runs his 40.

After the Cybex it’s dinner time, which is also an orientation meeting telling the players what to expect while at the Combine. When the players are done with dinner they start the interview process. Clubs request up to 60 players to interview while at the Combine. These interviews last no more than 15 minutes and they are strictly timed with a horn going off every 15 minutes, meaning the end of the current interview and then off to the next team. Each club has an interview room on the first floor of player’s hotel, so the walk between interviews is no more than a few seconds. There are some players who can have as many as 20-25 interviews and that can be a very mentally exhausting experience. Some players may have scheduled interviews every night they are in Indy.
In a building adjacent to the players hotel there is another huge “interview hall.” When players are not at specific places for medicals, testing or formal interviews they are in this building where coaches or scouts can do less formal interviews.
    Day 2

The players are up early for a day of medical testing. But before that, they are brought into a huge “ball room” where they stand on a stage in front of hundreds of scouts and coaches and their height, weight, arm length and hand span are taken. It is here where scouts see “body types.”

After the weight and measure period the players begin their medicals which are very comprehensive physical exams. It’s testing from A to Z and nothing is left out. Three groups of players have their medicals done each day, with over 100 players a day and it takes hours. The team doctors may ask for certain tests on players and it is here that more MRI’s and X-Rays are taken. I have seen in some years one player have as many as four MRI’s done. That night the players have scheduled interviews.

    Day 3
More testing but this time it isn’t medical testing — it’s intelligence and psychological testing. After breakfast the players take the Wonderlic Test, which is a 12-minute test that measures intelligence. When they are done with the Wonderlic they go to the “Interview Hall” for psychological testing. There is not one set test that the players take. Clubs hire different services to do this testing so players may take as many as four or five different tests before they are done with the psychological testing. The most famous psychological test done at the Combine was the “CPI’ test that used to be administered by the New York Giants. The Giants haven’t used this test in years and I think the players celebrated when they stopped. This test was unusually long — over 500 questions and it would take the average player about 90 minutes to do the test. I will say that it was an accurate indicator. I know…I took it!

When the psychological testing is done the players go back to the Dome for bench press testing. I always liked watching this because you can see the competitiveness of the players as they try to do better than the other guys in their group.
In past years, the players also met with the Players Association on Day 3 for a 60-minute meeting. Because of the NFL labor situation, I’m not sure if that meeting will be taking place this year but I assume it is.

After the players have dinner they are off to more interviews. Each night the interviews go until 11:00 p.m.

    Day 4
Finally the players get to work out! Most of you have seen this on the NFL Network. The players start off by running their 40 followed by the 20-yard shuttle, 3-cone drill, 60-yard shuttle, standing long jump and vertical jump. When they are done with the measurable drills, they do position drills. The position drills are run by NFL coaches and usually each player does six or seven different drills that are specific to their position. After the players are done with the position drills any player that is asked to work out at a second position does maybe four or five drills for that second position. It is here where many smaller defensive linemen will do linebacker drills.

All the drill work and measurable events are taped and clubs receive the workout tapes about a week after the Combine is complete. The league does a great job with these tapes, as they are split up individually so you can watch one player’s complete workout and then compare it to another player.
