Mayock: Angelo on top in bottom-line business
Mayock: Angelo on top in bottom-line business

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is well aware of Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo's first-round misses and even questioned the health of offensive lineman Chris Williams' before the Bears drafted Williams 14th overall in 2008. Williams went on to miss the first seven games of his rookie season following back surgery.
Regardless, Mayock applauds Angelo's draft record.
"You can only rate it on the last season and the last season, they had a heck of a year,'' Mayock said. "When you look at that, the bottom line is the Chicago Bears personnel department is doing a heck of a job. "
"It's a bottom-line business and a year ago, they were ready to fired (Angelo and coach Lovie Smith). And what do they do? They come out and they have a huge year. I thought Mike Tice did a great job with their offensive line because I didn't think there was any way they were a playoff team with that offensive line. The only way to grade (Angelo) is based on what they did this past season, and they did pretty damn well.''
But despite an NFC title game appearance, Angelo knows he needs to significantly upgrade certain aspects of the team, specifically the offensive line. The Bears own the 29th overall pick in the draft and have started holding private interviews with some of the top offensive line prospects in the draft.
Mayock believes there are several first-round-caliber linemen the Bears should target with that pick.
"A Gabe Carimi could be there from Wisconsin, or Derek Sherrod from Mississippi State,'' Mayock said. "Both of those guys are starters: one on the right side (Carimi), one on the left (Sherrod). And trust me, that Bears' offensive line needs an athletic upgrade."

Bullshit, the guy has been here for 10 years so why does only last year count? And while he's neatly applauding the 2010 draft did he overlook the fact that Greg Gabriel got canned by the very same guy he's lionizing. Did Mike Maycock write this or did Larry Mayer.

Can't figure out why he's touting a draft where we didn't even have a pick until the third round though. I think we've had better drafts although since JA has messed up on enough 1st and 2nd round picks we might just as well rate him from the third round on anyway, LOL.
The guys not the worst GM in the NFL but his complete body of work just doesn't justify this kind of praise.

Think its nice to see something not totally negtive abou angelo and eh team for a change personally Soul.. and bears going 11-5 and the NFCC is why think he rated it higher. And players like forte/olsen/williams/webb/knox/bennett/hester/manning/etc that were drafted the last few years and starters and a big part of what we did in 2010 is why do think despite also "misses". some to busy bashing the bears 24/7 to recoginize they were also "hits" and good picks also

Well he's not the worst GM around but what gets to many is that he's missed where he should hit and then hit's some homers where you wouldn't expect him to. Despite the victories his strikeouts in both the Oline and Dline loom pretty large this offseason and why many would think just the opposite of Maycock.

agree with that- just saying an he isn't the 'worst" by far and after wanny/mmc we DO KNOW what really the 'worst" looks like.. and we are a FAR CRY from that.. Just saying 40% of our starters are from he last 5 years drafts, while not "great" also not awul or even bad... to me is is in the middle somewhere for the league.. with both hits and misses like many- just seems here at times, only the misses get talked about the the "hits" like a forte, knox even a webb get hidden

Lets hope we do better in the upcoming draft.
