Angelo open-minded on Chris Williams' position

    February 25, 2011 3:02 PM | No Comments

    By Brad Biggs

INDIANAPOLIS -- With the Chicago Bears sifting through offensive line prospects here while also considering the free-agent market, it's going to be musical chairs at that position for some time.

After the fire drill the team went through last season to fill holes, that should create more flexibility with the players the team still has under contract. Former first-round draft pick Chris Williams is one of those players. He made 13 starts at left guard, including the postseason, after he had been billed for more than two years as the left tackle of the future.

Where does he fit into the big picture? Williams has 11 NFL starts at right tackle, seven at left tackle and 13 at left guard. That's almost two full seasons of starting experience for the 14th pick of the 2008 draft who will be entering his fourth season.

So, Jerry Angelo, where would you prefer he play?

"I really don't care where we have Chris, personally," the Bears general manager said. "I want to make sure that when everything plays itself it out, after we get through this period of allocating players, that we get the five best players on the field. You have heard this time in and time out, not just from me, from offensive line coaches, from anyone who is in this business that understands personnel. It's every bit about the continuity of the five players playing together. That's as critical as the talent of the players themselves. I'm not underscoring talent, but that is very important.

"Now, what the goal is now is get your five most talented players playing at the same time. That's the goal. That's what we want to do. Does that mean Chris is a tackle or guard? We can't determine that yet. Do I have a personal preference? Not really. Only because of the fact now that he's been exposed to the guard position so we've seen some things, just like Frank Omiyale, so we have created some versatility hopefully with our players."

Don't look for a job to be locked in for Williams in 2011. The Bears could have legitimate competition for two or three positions, maybe even four.

Not trying to be difficult but isn't he just stating what's pretty obvious to all of us? We debate it at least once a day, LOL.

I know but isn't Angelo saying they want to get the best 5 Olineman on the field pretty trite. I mean what else would you want to do unless your best 5 were all OG's or Centers and you expected one of them to start at LT? It isn't like he's saying what needs to be said. He's really just stating the obvious although I guess some may not think that way.

After a shaky start at his third position in three years, and first time he's played interior since he was 19, Chris came on very well at LG. His biggest problem was not getting worked physically, it was mentally knowing what to look for and expect inside when it comes to blocking assignments. His last three or so games of the season, he was our best all around OL, IMHO, and he looked very good pulling from the position. I still think he is an above average LT, but I have zero doubt he is a starter in the NFL on the left side of the line.

That was kind of a left handed compliment wasn't it?

I do think that we have to move Chris Williams back to LT unless we draft someone like Constanzo (SP?), Carimi, or Solder in the first round. Speaking of which, did any of you catch a glimpse of Nate Solder at the Combine yesterday? That guy is seriously athletic!

Agreed and if they decide to keep at LG, the mental stuff in the 2nd year will decreae tremendously with another cmp and preseason and tice on his case for the assignments, think that will be the key in 2011 whoever is the starting 5, the consistantcy of playing together and knowing the Switches, calls and each other
