Report: Bears' Manning gets tender offer for 2011

Staff report
ESPN.com reports that Chicago Bears safety Danieal Manning was tendered last week an offer for $1.29 million for 2011. But Manning might want to sit tight and wait for a new collective bargaining agreement, which could make him an unrestricted free agent. He would likely get a bigger payday on the open market.
The Tribune reported last month that Manning balked at the Bears' offer of a three-year deal, an offer worth $6 million, with about $2 million guaranteed.
"It just wasn't an offer I thought I deserved," Manning told the Tribune in January. "But when they gave me the offer, I didn't want to worry about it. I just wanted to play the season out and hopefully win the Super Bowl. That was my focus."

BTW since that tender is 10% above his 2010 salary, means if someone makes Manning an offer and we don't match, we get a 2nd rounder as compensation
here is the chart:
$3,168,000 *tender- 1st and 3rd round compensation if do not match
$2,521,000* tender- first round compensation
$1,759,000%- 2nd round compensation
$1,176,000*- whatever their draft status was
*= 110% of their 2010 salary or tag # whichever is higher

Very unlikely anyone makes him an offer with the possabilty that he is becomes unrestricted with a new CBA. He's not in that high of demand.

If he gets released, I think O.J./Sanders becomes that more imperative, or a cheaper version thereof. But only get the big names if IF, IF we're not freezing our chances to get a decent o-linemen or two and a cheap WR...

I would prefer Manning to the alternatives Burris mentions. Glad we get something on the table, though I might have gone for the first round tender.
Now that he has been playing just one position, he has shown he was worth that 2nd round pick. Definitely one of JA's better picks in the last few years, IMO.

He's developed into a good player, and is a great KR on top of it. I hope the Bears keep him. I could see another team that has no KR attempt to sign him, that would upgrade their return game and safety position both.

they already tendered manning, so not releasing him...he will be a bear unless another team makes an offer

Agree he is a solid player and the KR game helps alot. Just not sure any offer will be what manning thinks, i doubt any offer is above 3 mill/yr and most likely something like $10 mill for yeear 4yrs( $2.5 mil/yr), which depending on othe moves can see the bears matching..

looms like bears trying to keep hanie, roach and graham also.. good to see:
Keeping with the NFL's "business as usual" approach in the days leading up to the expiration of the current CBA, the Bears, according to multiple NFL sources, have tendered several players, in addition to Manning, in the last few weeks. The list of free agents with fewer than six accrued seasons the Bears are believed to be focusing on include: quarterback Caleb Hanie, linebacker Nick Roach, and cornerback Corey Graham.
Bears general manager Jerry Angelo did not return calls seeking comment, but said on Friday the club would start making roster moves this week.
"We talked about everything, talked through the issues, and then whatever decisions we will make with our present roster, we will make next week," Angelo said. "If there's anything with players or a player, we will cement that all next week."
