I think Ruskell is in a position of being able to improve the Bears approach to personnel and hopefully he takes advantage of that. The very fact that he was Angelo's hand picked successor to Gabriel and DePaul says to me that at the very least he should have a strong input on the draft and FA and that he should be listened to. Let's find out whether or not he's a difference maker.
Yep.. going to be an interesting draft for sure.. and we find out thurs if will be a lockout- or as suspect now maybe a 10 day delay to get things worked out so don't have the lock out and maybe teams can get F/A before the draft figured out which will help ALOT

so...what exactly is Ruskell's role in the draft? according to one of the articles, it sounds like he can't make the decision to move up or down, so does he then just try and sell the idea to JA?

I think they know that they need some fixes on the Oline but just how to go about it is still a question mark in everyone's mind I think. JA says he wishes that FA plays itself out before the draft and the reason why should be obvious because we discuss it here regularly.
Since we have big time needs at both spots do we use that first on a DT or an OT. If we can solve some of the Oline dilemna in FA we're free to use the #1 on a DT and if not maybe the OT becomes the bigger need.
Nowhere else other than CB do we have so many prospects who may be ready to step forward under Tice's coaching or become training camp cuts if they don't. We haved plenty of bodies but so far little top of the line talent. Can they become better just by playing together longer or will they never get any better no matter how many games they play?
I think Ruskell's take on it is pretty astute. He knows that both of the lines need help, he knows we need WR help but seemingly won't break the bank to get it, and he admits we need more warm bodies at QB and LB. About the only thing he overlooks is the obvious need for a true blocking FB/Power RB to pair up with Forte. I don't know but maybe he thinks that Unga is that guy.

exactly and esp this time of year in the "draft poker" game you NEVER show your hand or 'tells"..its all generic and i'd be super ticked off if a GM said "well we love player "X", let's hope he is still there".. or "we need player "Y" and "Z" to solve the line play... if anyone does that , he should be fired the next day..all about generic stuff this time of year.. no one should ever expect or want different

I must have missed that.
is there anyone on our oline that another team would want other then bench warmers? Start there with grading the oline. The fact we are looking at Cole instead of waiting on quality players looks like they think it is better then what it is. They are looking at backup quality like when they outbid themselves for Omyale. How did that work out?

who said we are looking at cole??.. that was just a reporter guessing we may have interest..you are readign waaaaaaaay to much into that.. here is all the bears actually said( nothing about cole)
"I'm presuming you're going to ask particularly about the offensive line, I know that has been a hot issue," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said last week at the Combine. "We aren't going to know how that's going to shape up until we get through free agency and we get through the draft. We're going to take our time. We're going to take advantage of that time."
and:
"It's one of the areas we would like to improve, yes," Smith said. "That was an area where we looked to improve during the course of the season and I felt like we did. We had a lot of different combinations that we used. [Offensive line coach] Mike [Tice] at least got the guys in a position that gave us the best chance to win. We're evaluating our offensive line like we're evaluating other positions."

We will see what will happen but two things that stand out to me as yet another oline blunderous offseason is we want Kreutz back and we have not cut Omyale.

OMG can always be a backup, as it's not likely we're gonna find a starter at LT AND a backup as well. I think OMG needs to ride the bench, Williams takes over, Garza takes a seat with him, and we get two new guys at guard. Despite struggling last year, Webb did about as well as several tackles taken in the first round, and showed the potential to be even better in his second season. He's not Josh Beekman II...

Omiyale is going to make 1.25 million this season, DB can confirm, and that is nothing for a decent backup LT that has started games in the system.
Kreutz is a veteran that knows the system and can make the call for the young guys, Webb and Draft Picks, and the new guysm free agents.
We need a big free agent signing and a high draft pick, but bringing a guy like Cole in for depth is a great move.

And that's one of the reasons Ruskell is in Chicago. Ruskell worked for Angelo for 13 years with the Buccaneers. He also worked with coach Lovie Smith and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli there.
Buddy system is alive and well in this org. Doesn't seem like he did much for Seattle, they got to the SB his first year and struggled ever since; getting rid of their best OL and ruining the career of their best rb at the same time.
I do like a lot of the things he says though; minus his comments about the OL/WR/2nd/3rd QB, so I'll reserve judgement until the offseason is completed.
