Good thoughts jackie but you give Ditka far more credit than he deserves. Those 80's Bears team were built courtesy of the efforts of Jim Finks and Jerry Vainisi not Ditka. The best example of how he runs an personnel department is how he traded away his entire draft for Ricky Williams. Hooboy!!!!

Vainisi drafted him and don't know how much input Ditka had in that. Hartenstine was retiring, Hampton was moving to LDE and we needed DT. Because of his weight he fell to us late in the first and became a folk hero but he was nowhere near being the main reason we won a Super-Bowl.

Theres the whole deal where Ditka got beat by Frisco because Walsh put a widebody into the game to beat us.

So Ditka got a widebody too to beat Frisco next year.

That was not the reason they drafted Perry. It was exactly as I said it was. The fact that Buddy Ryan wouldn't play him is what gave Ditka the idea to use him on offense just to show up Ryan. It worked because not only Perry start on D but Ditka also made him a national icon as a FB.

They didn't draft him just to beat SF, LOL.

agreed soul, they drafted perry because needed a DT,, and buddy being buddy, HATED all rookies( he wouldn't even call a player by their name until their sophmore year, just their number), and rided Perry in training camp about his weight, calling him a "bust" and "fatso", to in "buddy's way" of thinking it would inspire him.. it didn't and when played san fran, ditka threw him at end at the FB to 'get back" back walsh..
