I could see us with the ability to land two big time FA's and still have the $$$ to either sign our own or bring in some 2nd tier talent to replace them.
Think over the summer and once there is a new CBA and know the cap Number- i'd bet forte gets a new deal( been typical to offer one after 3 years for the long term players bears want) after we have locked up the Free agents we want and know the cap space we can give to him to struture the Deal

No doubt we extend him but I'd be cautious in doing it. After his slow start last season I'd like to see how he does behind an improved Oline this year before making the offer. We need at least part of this season to find out if he really is an elite all purpose back or not.

He is a bonafide NFL Talent and the heart of our offense. I think we just pay him and love life having a real NFL RB.

yeah doubt they will rush into it, but bet the start "negotiations" over the summer, so he KNOWS appreciated and stein probably explains that waiting for the other F/A first to know parameters, but that something is in works to make him feel good

It shows ya that unlike a certain recently released DT, he's more about the game and winning, than anything else.

Had nothing to do with peppers actually or about the game or winning
he was getting a $10.5 mill check either way, this is just a 'cap accounting" change by cliff Stein that the $10.5 mill check instead of being a roster bonus is now a signing bonus.. so for cliff stein the bears capologist, he now treats that $10.5 million check differently on the Cap accounting ledger... nothign changed or is noticed by peppers

Peppers just won't get that money all up front, unless he is released.
Not that it pertains to this situation, but kind of does in the restructuring process. Why couldn't the packers restructure Hawk's contract without releasing him first? Seems if they were going to release him and then give him a new deal, that they could just restructure his contract for less pay. (unless he wasn't willing to do so).

Yes he does get ALL UP FRONT- Be it a signing bonus or a roster bonus, it comes 100% to the player immediately in cash... the only difference is in the 'accounting ledger" for the cap, which because its labeled a "signing bonus" and not a "roster bonus".. the players still gets a one time payment of $10.5 mill, BUT on the accounting ledger, you are allowed to spread this number over the remaining years of the contract, even though ALL THE MONEY already went to the player( ie $10.5 mill/5 yrs= $2.1 mill to the cap ledger each year for 5 years instead of a 1 time $10.5 mill cost). I know it seems confusing, but the player always gets all the bonus upfront, even if the team for "cap reasons" gets to treat it different, the player money still up front.
And the reason the packers had to release hawk again an accounting move- becuase contractually obligated to the rookie contract, and trying to sav some space, they probably would ahve run into the 30% rule( meaning contracts can't go up more than 30% a year), so technically needed to release him first, and then write the new contract
Hawk said he was never too concerned that he wouldn’t be back with the Packers, who released him to avoid having to guarantee him a $10 million salary in 2011.
“That was part of the plan, and they gave me the heads up before they went public with it,” Hawk said in a phone interview on Thursday. “I had no problem with it because I knew we were getting close to getting something done. The plan all along was to stay here.”
Had Hawk and the Packers not been able to work out a deal before the CBA expired and a potential lockout followed, he would have had to wait until a new CBA was signed before he could restart negotiations with the Packers or any other team.
