The Bears Should Trade Down [Offseason Mock]

The more I look at this draft and the 29th pick and the more I look at this draft I keep coming back to the idea of trading down.

The Bears needs on the OL and the DL do not match with the value in the 1st round. Unless one of the top OTs fall in the draft the talent difference between Derek Sherrod and Ben Ijalana is not that much.

The talent level between Stephen Paea and Marvin Austin is nothing at all.

The Bears should look to trade down, possibly with a team looking at Mallett or Locker, and fill a number of needs in the 2nd round.

Free Agents

OT Jared Gaither [Baltimore] 5 years 42.5 million/ 12 guaranteed


The Bears need someone on the roster that has had success starting at LT in the NFL. Gaither has had issues in his career, but he could be a Pro Bowler at the most important position in the Martz offense. The Bears will pay more, but less guaranteed to cover themselves in case his issues creep back.

OG Max Jean-Gilles [Philadelphia] 4 years 10 million/4 guaranteed


The Bears need more than a single body on the OL to protect their investment in Cutler. Jean-Gilles is not an elite starter, but at 6’3” 358lbs he has the size Tice wants and has been a solid starter in the NFL.

CB Richard Marshall [Carolina] 4 years 16 million/7 guaranteed


Marshall fits the bill of a Cover 2 CB, he is physical and aggressive to the ball and struggles in man coverage. Added to his Cover 2 skills is the fact that he will not be exceptionally expensive and will allow Tillman to move to FS.

Draft


The Chicago Bears trade 1[29] and 4[129] to the San Diego Chargers for 2[50] and 2[61]. The San Diego Chargers select LB Martez Wilson [Illinios].

2[50] DT Marvin Austin [UNC] 6’2”309lbs.


The Bears have been willing to take risks on DTs that can explode up the field [Harris, Johnson] and that is what Austin can do. Austin’s numbers are unbelievable running a 4.8 [40] and benching 39 reps at 309lbs. His first step explosion is elite and he has shown the ability in his Junior season to get up field. What Austin brings with his exceptional athletic ability is a lot of baggage and off field concerns. The Bears have a veteran locker room that can control these guys and Lovie has shown that his players respond to him personally.

2[61] OG Orlando Franklin [Miami] 6’6”316lbs.


Franklin is a riser on many draft boards as he combine solid physical skills, 5.20 [40], 26 [225] and 29” vertical, with a physical nasty streak. Franklin also bring versatility having started at OT and OG in his college career. Franklin’s best position is at LG where he can brawl guys in the phone booth and use his tackle experience to pass protect.

2[62] C Stefen Wisniewski [Penn State] 6’3”313lbs.


Wisniewski is not going to wow anyone with his physical ability and he may never blow people off the line of scrimmage, but Wisniewski is a solid technician that will outwork the opponent. Wisniewski has exceptional technique and intelligence and can step in and compete with Kreutz to start at C.

3[93] WR Tandon Doss [Indiana] 6’2”200lbs.


The Bears need to bring some size into the receiving core, but they do not seem to think that the position is a serious need. Doss is a polished WR with solid technique and athletic skills. Martz demands that his WRs are solid route runners and they get to the spot they are suppose to and that is something that Doss can do.

5. LB Ross Homan [Ohio State] 6’1”240lbs.


Homan showed surprising athletic ability at the combine, 4.68 [40], 32 [225], and has the workmen like attitude to be a force on special teams and develop as a possible MLB of the future.

6. S Jasper Simmons [Missouri] 6’1” 205lbs.


The Daniel Manning RFA tender is going to be meaningless in the new CBA and someone is going to over pay for Daniel Manning’s special teams ability. The Bears need depth at the safety position and special teams players.

Every person I'm getting excited about the Bears getting keep looking like they're gonna get picked way before us (Liuget, Harris, Ballard and Boling((and I still gotta say Prince, even tho it's looking like he may end up top ten). I really think that trading down wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Esp. if there was a team dying to get a guy at our spot. If some how one of those four were there, i'd keep the pick and draft him, but not counting on it. I like your FA picks, but if we got Austin, I'd hope he could stay out of trouble.

Austin has the skills but the Bears value character so.........what makes you think they'd take a flyer on him. Franklin pretty much = CWill , OT physique without the all of the skills of an OT, so I'm not sure what we gain there. I'm not saying these guys aren't good value where you've got them but are they our guy? Much rather move up and get Luiget or Carimi if we have to.

The other thing Windy is that if you use the Draft Pick Value Chart those two Charger picks would cost a 1st (29) and a 3rd (88) not a 4th (128)

I do not agree with your assessment of Franklin being C Williams. In fact I see them as exact opposites. Franklin's strength is not his feet or his athletic ability it is his size and physical play.

Weather we trade up or down probably won't be bad providing we get some OL help in FA and Tice has input in the draft. I'm sure we can get a UT-3tech in the later rounds. It's finding a quality WR that worries me-we will see what Ruskell does.

Sorry on the points but you had picks #50 and #51 (790 pts) listed in your post, not #50 and #61. You may be right on these guys but once again we're stepping back away from the top guys and trading down to the 2nd tier.

My bad I changed it to 61.

I think there is a high probability by the 29th pick the top tier guys are all gone, this is a solid not elite draft.

I would rather pick 3 2nd tier guys then 2.

Some people love and others do not have in their top 5 at the position.

I think that there is a chance that he is there, I would put it at 50/50. He plays center, he is not physically dominant and those guys do not usually go top 50. Look at Ryan Kalil who went in a similar spot.
