Bears Mock Offseason [Trade on Up]

    Free Agents

The goal of this free agent period is to take advantage of the strong OG class that is set to become free agents. The Bears need to get young, bigger and more athletic on the inside to handle the demands of Martz's pass offense and the subsequent blitzing that occurs.

OG Justin Blalock [Atlanta] 5 years 25 million/ 12 guaranteed

At 6'4" 330lbs and having played OT in college Blalock is exactly what the Bears need.

    DT Brandon Mebane [Seahwaks] 5 years/ 22.5 million/ 13 guaranteed

A stout plugger that disrupts the pocket and has a history with Tim Ruskell.

WR James Jones [Packers] 4 years 14 million/ 5 guaranteed

Jones is far from a finished product and may not be the #1 the Bears need, but he is closer than anyone the Bears have to being that #1.

    P Steve Weatherford [Jets] 3 years 6 million/ 3 guaranteed

A big legged punter from Illinios that can kick in poor weather.

QB Marc Bulger [Ravens] 2 years 4 million/ 1 guaranteed

Bulger does not want to start anymore and physically has been beat up. In Chicago he can reunite with Mike mMartz and mentor Cutler while cashing a nice check. And as much as I love Hanie the team has been non-commital to him.

    Draft

*Trade* The Chicago Bears trade 1[29] and 3[93] to the Kansas City Chiefs for 1[22]. The Bears become aggressive to secure a higher rated OT on their draftboard before Indianapolis and Philadelphia come on the clock. The Chiefs moved down and select NT Phil Taylor [Baylor]

    1[22] OT Gabe Carimi [Wisconsin] 6'7" 315lbs.

The most versatile of the OTs in this draft as he can play LT, RT and possibly LG. Carimi is a ferocious competitor and a physical run blocker that has the athletic ability to play LT. He may never be a dominant pass blocker, but he will always fight the DE he is facing. Carimi faced 2 potential 1st round DEs this season in Adrian Clayborn [Iowa] and Cam Heyward [Ohio State] and held up very well. With the back end of the 1st round containing OTs that are getting compared to Chris Williams [Derek Sherrod] the Bears need to secure a player that can come in and start day 1. Mike Tice was recently at the Wisconsin Pro Day to work out Carimi and the last player he did that for was J'Marcus Webb.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zin3JvllXm0

    2[62] CB Curtis Brown [Texas] 6' 190lbs.

With DT [Mebane] and WR [Jones] addressed in free agency the Bears can focus on getting younger and more athletic at CB. Brown is a smooth athlete that showed at the Senior Bowl he will come up and make a tackle. Brown can step in and compete with starters Charles Tillman. The knock on Brown is his 4.51 [40] speed, but at the combine he showed a 39.5" vertical leap and great hands in the positional drills and Lovie values ball skills in the secondary.

*Trade* The Chicago Bears trade TE Greg Olsen to the Buffalo Bills for 3[68] and a conditional pick in 2012. The Bills TE position has been a black howl for years and the Bears have a TE that they are not going to use and that is going to leave in 2012 as a free agent.

    3[68] DT Allen Bailey [Miami] 6'3" 285lbs.

The Bears continue to add talent to the interior DL to replace the ghost of Tommie Harruis. Bailey is a raw football player that flashes dominance and then will disappear for times. The Bears will use him in a rotation and try and take advantage of his elite athletic tools, 4.71 [40], 27 [225], 37" vertical and 9'9" broad jump. Combine these physical tools with one of the games better DL coaches in Rod Marinelli and the Bears may have the interior pass rusher that they need.

    4. C Tim Barnes [Missouri] 6'4" 300lbs.

The Bears need to groom a center of the future to replace the declining Olin Kreutz. Barnes comes from a passing attack at Missouri and is use to making line calls and picking up blitz and stunts. For a center he also has the size that Mike Tice values and he was dominant at the East-West game.

    5. LB Akeem Dent [Georgia] 6'2" 235lbs.

A tackling machine at Georgia that has a physical style and some ability to run. Dent can help on special teams while he learns from Brian Urlacher.

    6. WR Vidal Hazelton [Cincinnati] 6'3" 215lbs.

Hazelton has had an injury history, but he has responded with strong play since transferring from USC to Cincinnati. At 6'3" he continues to add to the size in the WR core and will get time to learn.

I like the work you put into these mock draft except one little thing lol. You really downplay how much a FA is set to get in the open market. Im willing to bet Falcons would sign Blalock if 25 mil deal is all it would take.

I'm gettin' worn out with all these mocks Windy. Nobody is certain of how the draft will break down until after FA when we see who we got and who we managed to keep of our own. The only thing I can focus on right now is what the Bears may do in the first round. DT or OT? Whatever happens in one will govern how the next three rounds go IMO.

Also, any scenario that includes trading Olsen is useless in my opinion. I don't see him going anywhere this year. One more year in this system with a true FB in the backfield so he can be used more effectively elsewhere and you may find him the most improved pass catcher on the team. Remember, right now he's one of Cutler's favorite targets.

Bailey won't last that long, but I love him as a 3-tech prospect. I'll forget the useless trade up and say I don't see Carimi making it past 25. Much like his teammates, Chekwa especially, Brown is a very good C2 corner spect and I would love it if makes it to our second pick. I really want Chekwa, though.

People need to get over Mebane already, I've said it before and I'll say it again, he is NT, not a penetration guy. That is just too much money for a guy who plays a position that doesn't have a huge impact on our D. When Tommie was good at UT, he made garbage look great in the A gap role. All we need in that gap is another low key Adams-ish grab like Cofield to rotate with Toe and Harrison. Also, it's time to leave FA out of our draft strategy, because it's just not gonna happen before the draft.

I'll have to admit that I usually take these threads with a grain of salt because nobody really knows what the final decision(s) is going to be. I have to believe that we're not going to trade up to get anyone simply because it's not Jerry Angelo's style to do something like that.

LOL, Jerry Angelo's style is usually to be as silent and unpredicatable as can be before the draft and then do just what we all expect of him come draft day. We've been watching this guy for about 10 years now and he's getting pretty easy to figure out. However, this year he just might move up if his guy is sitting only a few picks in front of him and he thinks someone else may also want him.

From a History major at the University of Tennessee to you, Paul: STUDY YOUR HISTORY!!! lol. Jerry Angelo's pattern is to trade down to get more picks in the lower rounds. I'm scared that he's going to do exactly that, though something in me says that he's going to go after the first round pick hard and heavy since he's got Ruskell "the expert" analyzing offensive tackles and guards/centers.

Haha, although I love history most of my time studying it these days is confined to the financial history of the markets and such. Besides, we don't really need to spend much time studying the ways of one Jerry Angelo. He's about as hard to read as a "Dick and Jane" book.

Look Lovie, see Jerry draft, see see Jerry draft!
