Bears expected to work out TCU QB

Andy Dalton to work out for Bears, Vikings

    By Kevin Seifert

As we await word on how the business of the NFL will proceed after Friday's decertification of the NFL Players Association -- a lockout is expected at midnight ET -- we can rest assured of one fact: The 2011 draft will go on. To that end, let's close out Friday by noting that two NFC North teams reportedly have private workouts scheduled with TCU quarterback Andy Dalton.

According to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dalton said Friday that the Chicago Bears have lined up a workout. Adam Caplan of Fox Sports reported it will take place March 17 and added that the Minnesota Vikings also plan to work out Dalton as well.

The Bears would like to draft a developmental quarterback after losing 2010 draft pick Dan LeFevour through waivers last summer. Backup Todd Collins isn't expected back, and Caleb Hanie's contract has expired.

The Vikings have indicated they plan to work out many of the draft's top quarterbacks, including Auburn's Cam Newton.

It's still early to know what round Dalton will be drafted, but it's worth noting that Scouts Inc. ranks him as the No. 5 quarterback in the draft and the No. 58 prospect overall.

Happy lockout evening to each and every one of you.

I'm a Dalton fan, but this is a retarded waste of a workout considering he will go in the top half of the draft and we have much bigger needs in the trenches and skill positions. Hell, backup QB s probably the last thing I would put down as a draft want/need. It's a veteran position and I have been a Hanie fan all along.

Sometimes I wonder if they don't do it just to get a better scouting report on the guy in case they have an interest in him somewhere down the road. I think that's how we ended up with Omiyale, LOL.

I hope this is to get some inside info on Marcus Cannon, otherwise it is just stupid.

Even Dalton will probably think that our WRs suck.

What concerns me is that Dalton is a spread option quarterback and is thus not suited to be a competent NFL signal caller.

Bears holding private workout UNC T.J.Yates

Bears holding private workout UNC T.J.Yates

Team searching high, low for a developmental passer Brad Biggs

It didn’t work last year when the Chicago Bears drafted a developmental quarterback prospect.

Dan LeFevour wound up being a victim of final cuts and the team’s plan to add him to the practice squad was foiled when the Cincinnati Bengals scooped him up. Now, the Bears are out on the road looking for another quarterback.

Bears quarterbacks coach Shane Day is putting North Carolina’s T.J. Yates through a private workout today. Yates was a four-year starter for the Tar Heels, working under former Bears offensive coordinator John Shoop. He’s considered a late-round prospect. According to an NFL source, Yates has two additional workouts coming up.

The Bears are doing their homework. The team has a private workout scheduled with TCU’s Andy Dalton on Thursday, according to FoxSports.com’s Adam Caplan. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz has checked out Wisconsin’s Scott Tolzien and Idaho’s Nathan Enderle in pro day workouts.

The likely plan is for the Bears to find a rookie to fill the No. 3 role with Caleb Hanie assuming the No. 2 position behind Jay Cutler. But Martz has yet to publicly commit to Hanie.

good to see the scouts working hard in each position and a business as usual.. and Soul, IMO despite some writers looking for headlines, this again IMO shows bears not looking the F/A route and will have hanie the #2 and a prospect #3.. always follow the money and research : )

I'd have to agree based on this but you'd think that Martz would at least give Hanie a vote of confidence as the #2 after his resurrection of the offense against the Packers.

Why? He's not the starter nor will he be. The #2 QB job is not won in January or February in the Newspapers. It's won on the field in training camp.
But I swear if they spend another draft pick on a QB I'll buy the Bears and shitcan Lovie myself.

I don't necessarily agree with you on this. Somtimes even the #1 spot isn't decided until training camp and then again sometimes both numbers one and two are pretty much foregone conclusion. I believe that's what we have here. He doesn't have to annoint him as the #2 but a vote of confidence might be helpful right now.

He is a tendered RFA but it still would be nice for Martz to shove a little compliment in his direction since you already know they'll bring in at least one more body at QB.
