Henry Melton Starting 3 Technique?
Looks like Henry will be playing DT with Wootton top replacement at DE...
Bears DT Henry Melton has reportedly bulked up to 294 pounds this offseason and is creating a "growing internal buzz" in the organization.

Thanks for the post Windy and once again I will say that you were right and I was wrong. If Melton did truly bulk up on his own without losing any of that speed you know that he's highly motivated to get that strarting DT spot this year. He stands as good or better a chance of getting it as anyone we might be able to draft in the first round.
If the coaching staff feels that he's got the inside track (and remember this is Mullin saying this not Lovie Smith) we could lower our expectation for any rookie we draft. This may make it possible to draft a guy like Nevis who, though a little undersized, may be able to play very effectively in rotation with Melton. I don't think either of these guys are 3 down 4 quarter guys but with Toeina also in the mix at both UT and NT we might have a pretty effective inside game with whoever we draft.

I believe that you and I are meant to do this wrong/right dance from now till the Bears win the Superbowl.
Melton bulking up and announcing that he wants to start at 3 technique with the added weight is nice and I have confidence in him to start, but it also frees us up a little in the draft.
We should till add a 3 technique, but it might not be desperate for that player to start.

LOL, you're probably right. Neither one of us can accurately predict what these guys NFL careers will look like and apparently neither can many scouts and GM's. If so J'Marcus Russell would have been an undrafted FA. It's still fun to deabate the picks and the whys and wherefores though.
This is where that added guy might be someone like Nevis who can penetrate but may not be able to hold up against 330-350lb OG's all day long. Maybe not a 3 down 4 quarter starter like I said but an effective rusher in rotation would be fine with me. Anything they can do to improve the inside pass rush if fine with me. It's critical.

Melton was great in nickle downs and the bulk could help but he's no star in the making at UT. There is more to the position than speed and 290+ pounds.
I hope they lerned their lesson with Mark anderson as far as trying to make a situational player bigger than he is. I'm sure they did. Well, one of them anyway.

Bingo, Globe. He's still got a long way to go in order to graduate from his situational role, and even though I love him as our backup UT, it is just too important a position to hang our hats on him.

Probably a sane approach which is why I still hope we can get Liuget or Paea in the draft. In rotation with either of those two he could be very effective but he's not the second coming of Tommie Harris in his prime. What we need more than anything is a DT equivalent to Peppers.

With Melton this is a really good time to see if Rod can mold guys like this or Wooton. I still think Toe is going to be in the 3tech rotation-at least until we draft a UT.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

If we have Melton and spend a 2nd round pick on Drake Nevis or Marvin Austin I would be happy with the position heading into the season.

Nevis may be ok but I think Austin would be the second coming of Tank Johnson. The guy has talent but some character issues as well. Those guys don't seem to make out very well in Chicago. We took a chance on Tank when we drafted him then gave him two or three more. I don't think they'll ever spend a high pick on that kind of guy again.
