NEW ORLEANS -- The NFL work stoppage has put some of the Bears' plans on hold.
Bears general manager Jerry Angelo indicated he would like to sign some of his young veterans to contract extensions, but negotiations are off limits until a new collective bargaining agreement is in place.
"Matt Forte has done a great job for us," he said. "So has Greg Olsen. Earl Bennett, too. We have some guys. What we're able to do we can't say. There is too much uncertainty until the cap has been determined. There are too many moving parts now."
The Bears aren't quite sure how they will go about trying to improve their team because they don't know if free agency will precede the draft as it normally does.
"There is more planning than ever because of the uncertainty, the vast number of free agents that can become available," Angelo said. "Everyone wants to address their needs as soon as possible, so if the draft comes first, how does that impact free agency?"
A couple of things are certain, no matter whether the draft or free agency comes first. The Bears need help on the offensive line. And they need to get younger on defense.
As for the offensive line, in the past the Bears mostly have filled holes with veterans. That might not be the case this year.
"We like to go with the younger guys, we like to build our own line," Angelo said. "We've always done what we've had to do. Every year we are trying to compete. It's worked out that we've had some good veteran offensive linemen who were available, and we went in that direction. We've drafted some guys, we've lost some to injury. We understand the importance of the position. Whatever you have to do, you do."
Angelo said he also intends to look at defensive linemen who are available.
"We want to get younger on defense," he said. "We have some young guys coming up the ladder with Henry Melton, Corey Wootton. We need to get some young guys at linebacker in the pipeline. In the secondary we have Major Wright. We are still hopeful with Zack Bowman. We still feel good about Joshua Moore. We have five or six young guys in the pipeline, but we want to bring in more."
