Compensatory Draft Picks, Bears = None.......

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_yl...pensatorypicks

We don't get any but last years contributors to the Bears FA splurge sure did.

Panthers get a 3rd (97) for Peppers, Minny gets a 6th (200) for Taylor, and San Diego gets a 6th (201) for Manumaleuna. If we send back the "pineapple" can we have their pick this year, LOL.

Panthers get 3 compensatory draft picks

By BARRY WILNER, AP Pro Football Writer Mar 25, 7:20 pm EDT

NEW YORK (AP)—The Carolina Panthers were awarded three compensatory picks Friday for April’s draft after losing Julius Peppers(notes) to free agency before last season.
A total of 23 teams were allotted selections, beginning with a third-rounder (97th overall) to Carolina, which also has the top overall choice after going 2-14 in 2010. Peppers had an All-Pro season with Chicago, and Carolina also lost quarterback A.J Feeley to St. Louis.

Tennessee, Baltimore, the New York Giants, Minnesota, San Diego, Philadelphia, and San Francisco each got two additional picks.

Overall, 32 compensatory choices were given. Teams getting one apiece were Super Bowl champion Green Bay, Kansas City, Miami, Tampa Bay, Oakland, Seattle, New Orleans, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Denver, Cleveland, Arizona, Dallas, Washington and Houston.

The Titans lost defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch(notes) and tight end Alge Crumpler(notes),but they added DE Jason Babin(notes) as a free agent and he went to the Pro Bowl. Tennessee was awarded a fourth-rounder (130th overall) and a seventh (250).
Green Bay’s compensatory spot came because it lost DE Aaron Kampman(notes) to Jacksonville without adding any significant free agents last year. The Packers were given a fourth-round pick one spot behind Tennessee’s.

Baltimore will pick at the 164th and 165th spots in the fifth round. The Ravens lost defensive linemen Justin Bannan(notes) and Dwan Edwards(notes).

The Giants got two slots in the sixth round after losing quarterback David Carr(notes) and defensive tackle Fred Robbins(notes). Running back Chester Taylor(notes) and guardArtis Hicks(notes) left Minnesota, bringing the Vikings a sixth-rounder (200) and a seventh (235).

San Diego’s compensatory picks (201 and 233) came for the departures of tight end Brandon Manumaleuna(notes) and wide receiver Kaseem Osgood. Philadelphia will have two extra picks in the seventh round for losing Babin and safety Sean Jones(notes). San Francisco’s two compensatory seventh-round selections came for losing wide receiver Arnaz Battle(notes) and tackle Tony Pashos(notes), but signing Carr.

Since 1994, the first year compensatory draft picks were awarded, 555 have been handed out. Baltimore has gotten the most, 31, and Cleveland the least, two.
Of teams in the league since ’94, the Jets have received the fewest, five.

This is compensation for losing a player to FA and not a trade. The team that signs the FA doesn't give up that pick. It's an extra compensatory pick based on some arcane formula that establishes a players value which only the NFL seems to know, LOL. The picks are based on the players you lose through FA vs what you may have gained. And again don't ask how they determine it. No one knows but them.

In theory, compensatory picks are there to make up for good players escaping. Glad, really, that we don't have any.

Yes I know Payne wasn't a FA I was just wondering out loud. This arcane FA comp. formula is indeed strange.

Yep, and no one that I know of has been able to adquately explain it although it does make some sense that losing a guy like Peppers (3rd rd pick) is worth more than Taylor (6th rd pick) but why a 3rd and not a 1st, 2nd or a 4th I have no idea.

3rd is the best you can get. And it has to do with where they were drafted, and/or how they have been tendered previously, I believe.

actually there isa guy adamjt13 that been doig a good job follwoing it and has it pretty close to down:

    http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/2010/03...nfl-draft.html

Although the formula has never been revealed, by studying the compensatory picks that have been awarded since they began in 1994, I’ve determined that the primary factor in the value of the picks awarded is the average annual value of the contract the player signed with his new team, with an adjustment for playing time and a smaller adjustment for postseason honors. It should be noted that the contract value used in the equation does not include some parts of the contract, and that the contract information reported in the media is often incorrect.

Each qualifying player has a value based on his contract, playing time and postseason honors, and that value corresponds to a round in the draft. In the compensatory equation, each qualifying player that a team signs cancels out a qualifying player that the team lost whose value is the highest in the same round. If there are no lost players remaining in that round, the signed player cancels out the lost player whose value is the next-highest. A signed player will cancel out a lost player whose value falls in a higher round only if there are no remaining lost players. After all of a team's qualifying signed players have canceled out a lost player, the team can receive a comp pick for each qualifying player who remains. For example, consider a team that loses one qualifying player whose value falls in the third round and another qualifying player whose value falls in the sixth round but signs a qualifying player whose value falls in the third round. That team would receive a sixth-round comp pick because the signed player would cancel out the loss of the higher-valued player. If the signed player’s value were equal to a fourth-round pick or lower, however, the team would receive a third-round comp pick, because the signed player would cancel out the loss of the lower-valued player

is possible for a team to get a compensatory pick even if it doesn’t suffer a net loss of qualifying free agents. That type of comp pick comes at the end of the seventh round, after the normal comp picks and before the non-compensatory picks that are added if fewer than 32 comp picks are awarded. There have been 14 of these “net value” type of comp picks awarded, and in each case, the combined value of the free agents lost was significantly higher than the combined value of the free agents added. In all 14 cases, those teams lost the same number of qualifying free agents as they signed. No team has been awarded a comp pick after signing more qualifying free agents than it lost, no matter how significant the difference in combined value. This year, I’m projecting that Oakland will receive a net-value comp after losing Jake Grove and signing Khalif Barnes, whose value is less than one-sixth of Grove's value. According to my projections, none of the other teams that lost and signed the same number of qualifying players suffered a loss in value that was significant enough to warrant a net-value comp pick. Arizona came the closest, followed by Baltimore and Buffalo, but they all fell short of the projected loss in value that is necessary to receive a net-value comp pick.

contin if not crossed eyed in link.. : )
